To start the game off, Sunrise Mountain was able to keep pace with Millennium’s fast and upbeat tempo of play. Despite having eight turnovers in the first quarter of the game, they still were able to keep things close, with the score being 15-12 in favor of Millennium.
However, Millennium was able to find it’s true rhythm in the second quarter, which is when they started to really extend the lead. Not only were the shots really starting to fall for the Tigers, they also cleaned up their play and had only two turnovers in the second quarter compared to the Mustangs seven turnovers.
Millennium senior Alexandra Zelaya and sophomore Trayanna Crisp really came alive in the second quarter, combining for 16 of the team’s 25 points. Junior Amoret Maxwell, a bench player, also started to make her presence known on the court in the second quarter. Going into the half, Millennium had pulled ahead to a 40-18 lead.
Coming back out after the half, Sunrise Mountain still wasn’t able to adjust to stop Millennium. Nearly six minutes ticked off the clock before the Mustangs were able to put any points on the board in the third quarter. When things were all said and done, the Tigers outscored the Mustangs 13-5, extending the lead out to 53-23 and securing themselves the state championship title.
With eight minutes remaining, Millennium started to play more of its bench players to get them experience playing in high pressure situations. Even with rotating in some of the younger players, Sunrise Mountain still was only able to score seven points in the final eight minutes.
Three of Millennium’s players finished the game in double digits. Those players included Zelaya, Crisp and Maxwell. Senior Jasmine Singleton lead the team in steals with seven and in assists with five. Meanwhile for Sunrise Mountain, Teryn Demaree was the lone player to reach double digits with 16 points on the night. Freshman Mackenzie Dunham and sophomore Kelci Connolley both had two steals on the night, and no player had more than one assist.
