All four teams have prepared for the chance to play for a state title and they’ll get their chance on Saturday. Here is a preview of both games starting with a high level East regional final:
#9 Bishop McGuinness (24-4) vs. #3 Weldon (26-1) 2 PM (Minges Coliseum)
Bishop McGuinness has been the symbol of excellence for 1A girls basketball over the last several years. This years Villains are on a different path than previous teams out of Kernersville seeding wise, but they’ve been dominant over their first four games. They’re led by 2021 guard Michelle Petrangeli along with 2023 forwards Tate Chappell and Charley Chappell. The number nine seed has won their playoff matchups by 36, 25, 17, and 35 respectively with their last two wins on the road over defending champion Pamlico County and John A. Holmes.
Weldon has used their frontcourt size to dominate against the competition all season. The Chargers come into this game with a 26-1 record and their lone loss was all the way back in November. That adds up to a 25-game winning streak led by 2020 guard Tecara Ashe and forward Skylah Travis who averages 21 points and 11 rebounds per game. They’ll need their two senior leaders to have big nights if the Chargers want to reach the state title and it’s sure to be an excellent contest at East Carolina University.
#3 Mitchell (22-5) vs. #1 Murphy (29-0) 2:15 PM Tarton Complex
Murphy has reached the regional final in the 1A West for the third consecutive season. The Bulldogs lost last year to East Surry, but got their revenge this year in the fourth round. They’re led by forward Torin Rogers Torin Rogers 6'2" | SF Murphy | 2022 State NC , the number five ranked prospect in the PGH NC 2022 rankings. She holds multiple Division 1 offers and looks to lead Murphy to their first state title in over two decades.
In their was is the Mitchell Mountaineers led by 2021 guard Marly Cloer and forward Paige Johnson. They’ll be looking for the upset in their first regional final appearance in 11 years after traveling to Alleghany and winning in the fourth round. However, they face a Murphy that’s on a mission to finish their season undefeated. This high level matchup will be a part of many excellent games held in Hickory this weekend.
