Kayla Henderson, Coppin Academy, 2020
Kayla is a lightening fast guard averaging 24 points and six assists per game. She is a terror on defense and hard to beat off the dribble. Her perimeter shot is good enough that defenses cannot sag off her. She gets into the paint at will and she shoots a high percentage from the free throw line. Coppin’s success in 1A are tied to her performance. She is undecided on where she will play college.
Jazmine Washington, Oakland Mills , 2020
Jaz is having a great season as one of the highest scoring guards in the area, behind only Tiffany Hooker of Reservoir. With a tight handle and long range on her jumper, she is a handful. She has shown that she can run a team so she is not just a scorer. She brings a ferocious and competitive spirit on defense and never takes a play off.
Tiffany Hooker, Reservoir, 2020
The “Tiff Buckets” show has been all that and then some. She scoring over 27 points per game despite defenses game planning for her on a consistent basis. She is explosive, fast and strong enough to finish through contact. She routinely scores while being fouled which has enabled her to pile up points. She will lock up full court on defense and is an exceptional defender. Even though she does the bulk of the scoring for her team, she has developed a good feel for how to run an offense. She will attend Smith College in Massachussetts next season.
Ny’Ceara Pryor, Western, 2022
She’s small but she can ball. The sophomore known as “Lil Mama” throughout the DMV is one of the top pure point guards in the area. She has a pass first mentality but can also score. She’s been off ball a lot more this season for some reason, but her best position is point guard. She has improved her 3 point shot which has made her even more affective.
Briel Owens, Meade, 2020
Brielle is one of my favorite unsigned seniors in the area. She is deadly in transition, and she is in transition a lot. She is a very active defender so she comes up with a lot of steals and reflections which lead to fast break opportunities. She will contribute next year in the right college situation.
