Sometimes freshmen are able to step in right away and make a big impact. Older players take on a bigger role. Here’s a few more players I’ve seen this year from the CIF City Section Western League who look poised to continue their upward trajectory.
1. Taylor Arnold Taylor Arnold 5'10" | SF Palisades Charter | 2023 State CA – Palisades 2023
Arnold carved out a solid role as a freshman off the bench for a Dolphins team that advanced to the State Championship game. In the regional semifinals against Mater Dei Catholic, she had a few big plays around the rim cutting along the baseline and offensive rebounding. She is a strong rebounder and solid in the paint, but she can also put the ball on the floor at times. Can help mitigate the loss of Jane Nwaba next season.
2. Danielle Burnside – Westchester 2022
Burnside was a sophomore this past season, and looks like she’ll be a key piece for the Comets for the next two years. She was the Comets third leading scorer (12 points) in their CIF Division 1 championship win over Carson. She can establish position in the paint and is solid on the glass. Gets in good position for rebounds and boxes out. Good offensive rebounder. Can finish around the rim.
3. Deyla Davis – LACES 2023
Davis was a strong scorer as a freshman. She is a strong guard who uses her strength well when she puts the ball on the floor to get to the rim. She can absorb contact and get herself to the free-throw line. Crafty with her footwork and can Euro-step her way around defenders to finish at the rim. Pretty good three-point shooter. Strong future ahead for her.
4. Elise Arnold Elise Arnold 5'10" | SF Palisades Charter | 2023 State CA – Palisades 2023
Taylor’s twin sister, Elise looks poised to have a bigger role next season, especially with Jane Nwaba off to Pepperdine. She is a versatile player who can play both forward and center. Can play in the post or can play on the wing. Shooting range out to the three-point line. Can handle the ball at times. Defensively she is a decent shot blocker and presence around the rim.
5. Kenna McConnachie – LACES 2023
For a young player, McConnachie has solid court awareness and skill. She has the tools to be a strong player who can play shooting guard or point guard at times. In transition, she can run the floor off ball or act as the ball handler. Creates her own shot well on the perimeter. Decent shooter. Can put the ball on the floor and get to the rim.
