The 2023 class was exceptional in this area and at least 3 players could have been named Freshman of the year. The voting was close but Makaela came out on top. She is smooth shooter from deep with a quick release and loves taking big shots. She never gets rattled and plays with calm demeanor at all times. She had a tremendous playoff performance against Pallotti and almost helped her team score the upset win. She is holding Power 5 conference offers already.
First Team
Amani Watt, Center, Old Mill
Ms. Watt put up some outstanding numbers on her way to averaging a double double including a 27 point 20 rebound outburst. Her nickname is Baby Shaq because of how she dominated inside the paint.
Hawa Doumbaya, Center, Mt. Carmel
At 6’4′ Hawa was definitely an imposing figure for Mt. Carmel. She had a very impressive performance in the IAAM championship game that turned a lot of heads. She is fundamentally sound with her post moves and her size allows her to dominate on the glass. Lots of potential here.
Paris Locke Paris Locke 5'11" | SF McDonogh | 2023 State MD , Wing, McDonogh
Paris put together a stellar rookie season as she came out of the gate with a big 20 point double double game and continued to contribute throughout the season. Her game is mature and polished and she will help keep McDonogh in contention for the next 3 years.
Da’Brya Clark, Guard, Poly
Ms. Clark was arguably the best freshman in the area. She is a bucket maker and that is what she did for Poly from the jump. She is very aggressive and confident with the ball and she has started to evolve into a point guard as well. Power 5’s will be lining up for her as her game continues to grow.
Amouri Porter, Point Guard, Glen Burnie
Amourie provided strong leadership and steady play for the Gophers all season long. She stepped right into a major role while providing scoring and play making and setting the tempo on defense.
Kamari Sims Kamari Sims 6'0" | PF Riverdale Baptist | 2023 State MD , Guard, Spalding
Kamari is a big, physical guard that makes plays. She is especially tough inside and on mid range shots. She bangs the boards really well for a guard and has some nice change of pace moves that allow her to create space. She had an excellent first season at Spalding.
Second Team
Samiya Nasir, Guard, Howard
Howard had some of the strongest guard play in the area so Samiya had to carve out a niche and a role for herself as the season went along. She did just that and proved to be a valuable contributor down the stretch. She shot the ball extremely well from the perimeter and gave solid minutes as a back up point guard. She was also a strong on ball defender.
Ande’a Cherisier, Wing, St. Timothy’s
This is a strong and physical power forward that likes to bang inside and finishes well. She has expanded her game looks a lot more comfortable handling the rock and knocking down perimeter shots. She had very impressive freshman season at St. Tim’s.
Tamir Whittle, Point Guard, Long Reach
Tamir is the total package as far as point guards go. She has a tight handle and can knock down pull up three pointers from deep, or get into the paint and finish. She has a nice mid range game and excellent court vision. Very competitive and unafraid of taking big shots. Very exciting player to watch.
Mariah Sanabia Mariah Sanabia 6'0" | PF Archbishop Spalding | 2023 State MD , Wing, Spalding
One of my favorite players from the 23 class. Mariah is very versatile and has great size. She can handle the ball and is comfortable running the point. Defensively she often anchored the middle of the Cavaliers’ zone defense because she’s smart and has great instincts. She’s a very efficient three point shooter.
Hailee Ford, Guard/Forward, Concordia Prep
Concordia Prep made their first appearance in the IAAM championship game and Hailee was a big part of their success. She scored, rebounded and provided solid all around play. She has range out to the three point line and spent a lot of time running the point. At 5’11” she has great size and a nice skill set.
Aryss Mactoon, Wing, St. Timothy’s
Aryss is one of the most athletic players in the class of 2023. She brings energy and speed and to both ends of the court and comes up with timely offensive rebounds. She is very strong in transition.
Other Standouts
Gabrielle Kennerly Gabrielle Kennerly 5'10" | SF Howard | 2023 State MD , Guard, Howard
GK started the season recovering from a knee injury. She played less than half the season but was very good as her minutes increased. I was impressed with how she crashed the offensive boards and knocked down perimeter shots.
Trinity Massenburg Trinity Massenburg 6'1" | PF Baltimore Poly | 2023 State MD , Power Forward, Poly
Trinity is a big time prospect and she jumped right into the Poly rotation providing defense, rebounding, physical play and some scoring.
Kameryn Dorsey Kameryn Dorsey 5'7" | PG St. Frances Academy | 2023 State MD , Point Guard St. Frances
Kameryn provided spark off the bench for St. Frances which is no surprise. She’s a fierce and skilled competitor that never takes a step back. I think she was poised for a big summer on the Under Armour circuit.
Maya Woodson, Hammond, Wing
Hammond was not really on the radar as a program this season but Maya is potentially the type of player that can get them more recognition. At close to six feet she has a college ready build and a ton of potential. If she continues to develop and and play with aggression she will be one of Howard county’s best.
Nylah Davis, Mt. Carmel, Point Guard
Nylah was a ball of energy throughout the season. She has a non stop motor and attacks relentlessly on both ends of the floor. She averaged 5 assists per game and helped Mt. Carmel reach the IAAM Championship game.
Marley Saunders, Gerstell Academy, Point Guard
Marley performed like a smooth and seasoned veteran in her freshman season with Gerstell. She delivered solid stats and provided stable play in the team’s biggest games.
