Many of these players play at the guard spot in high school but with their size project to likely play on the wing. There are 34 wings ranked in the updated rankings and almost all of them can handle the ball. Within the next year or so I expect that a few of these players will become more athletic and move into a player who can guard quick guards full time. At the very top of the wing rankings and our highest ranked player overall of the bunch is Ryley Goebel Ryley Goebel 5'11" | SF Center Point-Urbana | 2022 State IA . Goebel is one of the best defenders in the state regardless of class. She’s a long and lanky defender who makes life tough on the opposition every single time down the floor. Goebel has come around on the offensive end of the floor recently as well making her even more valuable.
Two other wings are in the Top 10 as Taylor Veach Taylor Veach 5'11" | SF Central DeWitt | 2022 State IA sits at #6 and Reagan Barkema Reagan Barkema 6'0" | SF Roland-Story | 2022 State IA is at #7. Both of these players are pretty similar as they handle the ball a lot at the high school level and have the ability to bounce down into the post against smaller defenders. Both can shoot it at a high rate from the outside and get to the basket. Lauren Blake Lauren Blake 5'11" | SF Indianola | 2022 State IA is the fourth small forward on the list and she is a versatile wing who can play spots 1-3 with ease. Her athleticism has improved and she has become a bigger offensive threat. She would be a good candidate to move into the Top 10 if she continues to improve.
After Blake, you have a big of a gap to Meg Rietz Meg Rietz 5'10" | SF Ballard | 2022 State IA at #23 and Abigail Jones Abigail Jones 6'2" | SF Waukee | 2022 State IA at #24. Reitz and Jones are still a bit raw but have been developing well over the past year. They can fly up the rankings if they continue to improve to this point next year. Kamryn Grissel Kamryn Grissel 5'8" | SF Prairie | 2022 State IA , Bridget Stover Bridget Stover 5'11" | SF Winterset | 2022 State IA , Reese Johnson Reese Johnson 5'8" | SF Denver | 2022 State IA , and Maddax DeVault Maddax DeVault 5'8" | SF Nodaway Valley | 2022 State IA round out the Top 10 and all are very close in terms of college projections. Grissel is a long athlete who is coming along on the offensive end of the floor while Stover is a tall and very athletic wing who can play both on the perimeter and on the inside. Johnson and DeVault have both risen considerably in the rankings and their production this past year cannot be understated. There are a total of 16 wings in the Top 50 in the class of 2022 and I suspect that most of them will have a high potential to continue to rise up the charts. There is a lot of talent here with this class.
