Freshmen who had the opportunity to contribute at the varsity level will now enjoy increased roles while also continuing to develop. With the 2019-20 season in the rear view, let’s take a look at some of the best guards who made an impact in their first year of high school ball.
Tristen Taylor Tristen Taylor 5'4" | PG Duncanville | 2023 State TX – 2023 5’5 Point Guard Duncanville HS – She played a major role in Duncanville’s championship run last season as their starting floor general. Now that Deja Kelly Deja Kelly 5'8" | PG Duncanville | 2020 State TX is off to North Carolina, Taylor will be the team’s lead guard. She has tremendous speed with the ball and is a crafty finisher on the drive. Her stock should continue to rise during her sophomore campaign as she becomes the Pantherettes’ go-to option on offense.
Amarachi Kimpson Amarachi Kimpson 5'7" | PG Little Elm | 2023 State TX – 2023 5’7 Point Guard (CyFair) Little Elm HS – I got to see Kimpson put on an offensive clinic at the Dallas Mavericks Fall Classic late last year. The No. 4 ranked prospect in our 2023 Rankings is an elite scorer. She shoots the three ball at a high clip from the catch and off the bounce while being able to frequently score inside as well. If Kimpson continues to improve her game, the sky is the limit.
Katelyn Jones – 2023 5’6 Point Guard (Texas Lonestar 16 Black) Denton Guyer HS – Jones started alongside three D1 prospects last season which ultimately made her Guyer’s fourth option. She was mostly asked to play good defense and facilitate. She did both at a high level. With Jade Thompson Jade Thompson 5'6" | CG Denton Guyer | 2020 State TX graduating, Jones has a chance to expand her offensive responsibilities and contribute more as a scorer. She was efficient with her limited shot attempts as a freshman. I’m excited to see what she can do as a Sophomore.
Zeryhia-Lee Tuimoloau Aokuso – 2023 5’9 Combo Guard (Pro Skills EYBL) Amarillo HS – This is another prospect who should benefit from the departure of a graduating senior. Zayla Tinner Zayla Tinner 5'11" | PF Amarillo | 2020 State TX will be playing for the USC Trojans next year, and that means Tuimoloau Aokuso could potentially step into the role of Amarillo’s point forward. She is a smart and accurate passer who takes high-percentage shots. Her defense is great too. She’ll get to show off her versatility in her second year of varsity ball.
Sophia Miller – 2023 5’5 Combo Guard Trinity Christian Academy (Addison) – Miller loves to push the tempo and run on offense. She is poised under pressure and knows how to create for herself and her teammates. She is electric in the open court, but also understands when to slow things down. Her and Olivia Brennan make up what might be the most underrated backcourt duo in DFW.
Alexis Cortez Alexis Cortez 5'10" | SF Allen | 2023 State TX – 2023 5’11 Shooting Guard/Small Forward (Lady Drive Nation Duncan 2023) Allen HS – Cortez does a really good job of handling the ball out on the wing. Additionally, she is a lock-down defender on and off the ball. The 2023 prospect mostly came off the bench for Allen as a freshman, but it is a pretty safe bet that she will be inserted into the starting lineup in her second year. She is a two-way player with versatility, solid length, and a lot of upside.
