Who are the best players in the Bismarck area?
For the sake of this exercise, the Bismarck area includes the Bismarck schools, Mandan, Flasher, Underwood and New Salem/Almont.
Here’s a look at the top forwards in the area:
1.Julia Fitterer, Bismarck Century
Fitterer was a nice role player for the Patriots as a sophomore but emerged as one of the top players in the state as a junior, leading Bismarck Century in scoring while shooting better than 40 percent from 3-point line. She’s a solid rebounder, steady facilitator and versatile defender and her impact on winning allowed the Patriots to remain among the elite teams in Class A despite their best player missing the entire season with an injury.
2.Arianna Berryhill, Bismarck Legacy
Berryhill was a focal point for a Bismarck Legacy team that won the WDA regular season and tournament championships, averaging better than 12 points per game. She is a solid perimeter shooter, an excellent slasher who gets to the free throw line at a solid rate and can make plays for her teammates. She’s a rock-solid defender for a Sabers team that has been among the best defensive teams in the state the last few years and she’ll have the full reigns offensively as a senior. Expect big numbers next year.
3.Sydney Gustavsson, Mandan
Gustavsson took the jump between her sophomore and junior years, going from a nice complementary piece on a top-notch Mandan team to a focal point for a Braves team that reached the state semifinals. She averaged better than 13 points and five rebounds while shooting 36 percent from the 3-point line and improved as a playmaker. She’s a Player-of-the-Year candidate next year.
4.Jilee Golus, Bismarck
Golus took her game to another level as a sophomore, averaging nearly 15 points per game for a Demons team that was among the 10 best in the state. She’s a long, athletic and skilled wing who can get to the paint, make plays and finish in traffic. She’ll be one of the top scorers in the WDA over the next two years and could be a huge factor for a Bismarck team that will go into the year expecting to contend for a league title.
5.Payton Gerving, Bismarck
Gerving stepped into a starting role as a sophomore and while she struggled at times with her efficiency, she showcased the ability to impact the game with the ball in her hands, creating shots off the dribble, knocking down 3-pointers and getting to the free throw line. Bismarck is going ot be one of the top teams in the WDA next year – much of that expectation rides on Gerving taking that sophomore-to-junior jump.
6.Faith Marion, Flasher
Marion’s been a key piece for a solid Flasher team each of the last two years, averaging 11-13 points per game each season. She’s a rock-solid defender and has the length and athleticism to defend multiple players up or down a lineup. She’s active on the glass and can get into the paint and finish over length at a solid level. With the Bulldogs losing the Alt sisters, Marion will have to take on a bigger offensive role and it wouldn’t be surprising to see her put up 15-18 points per game.
