Either way, this is a strong class with a lot of talent. The rankings currently have some players who will take the next step as sophomores. Here is part one of a two part series following stock risers in the Class of 2023 rankings.
Mattison Chiera Mattison Chiera 5'10" | CG Colonia | 2023 State NJ | Colonia
Chiera is already the No. 1 option at Colonia. The freshman averaged 14.1 points per game and eclipsed 20 points six times. She set a career-high in a late season win over New Brunswick with 28 points. She is an elite prospect in Central Jersey. Chiera hit 34 three’s this season and got to the line with regularity. She made 80 free throws and totaled 368 points.
Grace Kowalski Grace Kowalski 5'6" | SG Montville | 2023 State NJ | Montville
Kowalski is one of the prospects that set groundwork to turn into a star. She was a dynamic scorer for Montville in her first season. Kowalski was able to score in many ways. She hit 40 three’s and proved to be an elite mid-range shooter as well. Montville has a bright future with Kowalski.
Gissell Gamble Gissell Gamble 5'5" | PG Franklin | 2023 NJ | Franklin
Gamble was a main contributor for Franklin this season. She will be thrown into an increased role next season and she is ready for it. Gamble scored in double-figures 11 times this season including five in a row early on. She is a scorer. Gamble has a smooth looking jump shot from deep and showed the ability to create. As she gets older, Gamble will develop more and more moves to will help her in the open court.
Mikaela Hubbard Mikaela Hubbard 6'2" | PF St. John Vianney | 2023 State NJ | St. John Vianney
The Lancers are one of the top teams in New Jersey. Madison St. Rose Madison St. Rose 5'10" | PG St. John Vianney | 2022 State #65 Nation NJ is the best player in the state and Hubbard can learn from her over the next two years. The 5’10 freshman can play many positions. She has the size and athleticism to succeed on both ends of the floor. Hubbard is agile and will grow her skillset over the course of her career.
Meghan Gentile Meghan Gentile 5'8" | CG Hudson Catholic | 2023 NJ | Hudson Catholic
Gentile is part of a guard heavy lineup for Hudson Catholic. She scored in double-figures nine times in her first season including a career-high 18 points in a win over Kearny. Gentile is a versatile guard. She is a combo at 5’8 that can also play down low in a pinch. The versatility will make her very valuable for Hudson Catholic.
Jaylin Hartman Jaylin Hartman 6'2" | SF Blair | 2023 State NJ | Blair
Hartman is in a prime position to succeed. She is at one of the top basketball schools in the state. Blair breeds next level players and Hartman can be one of the them. The 6’2 forward can play three positions on both ends. Her work on the defensive end is way beyond her years. Hartman is an athletic big with quick feet and strong hands. All of those are tools to succeed.
