Continue ReadingWe have not only released our first 2023 rankings, but we have done a quick update so we are not ready to give you some coverage of what this class has to offer. In Southern Illinois there have been a large number of players that have made an impact in their first year. I will be continuing my theme of covering the front court, forwards and centers, in one article and the back court, wings and guards in another. Here we take a look at some of the top back court players in the class of 2023.
- Shannon Dowell Shannon Dowell 5'9" | SG O'Fallon HS | 2023 State IL 5’9 Guard from O’Fallon. Shannon is a long and athletic guard that excels in the open floor. She can get to the basket and finish in a variety of ways. Her build lends itself to her being a top flight defender with continued focus and effort.
- Jailah Pelly Jailah Pelly 5'9" | SG O'Fallon | 2023 State IL 5’10 Guard from East St Louis. Jailah is a long athletic wing. She excels in an a fast paced game on both ends of the floor. She scored 12 points per game and showed the ability to score at all three levels. Jailah uses her length well on defense and finishing in the lane
- Shakira McCline Shakira McCline 5'5" | CG East St. Louis | 2023 State IL 5’5 Guard from East St Louis. Shakara is a smaller but very quick/fast. She started from day 1 and showed her ability to score consistently. Shakara plays excellent defense and can get to the hole. She averaged 13.5 points per game.
- Kaylee Niebrugge Kaylee Niebrugge 5'9" | SG Teutopolis | 2023 State IL 5’9 Guard from Teutopolis. Kaylee is a very fundamentally sound player that can do multiple things on the floor. She defends well and rebounds well. Kaylee can score in many different ways and is a good team player that should have a chance to contribute more on a very good team next year.
- Laylah Jackson Laylah Jackson 5'6" | PG O'Fallon | 2023 State IL 5’6 Combo Guard from Belleville East. Laylah is a point guard with a scorers mentality. She has deep range that will surprise an unsuspecting defender. She has the strength and handles to get in the lane and score. Laylah is a crafty player that can find or create space for scoring opportunities.
- Trinity Tingley Trinity Tingley 5'5" | PG Paris | 2023 State IL 5’5 Point Guard from Paris. Trinity is a lead guard in every sense of the term. Trinity handles it well and knows the game. As a coaches daughter she knows the game plan and can execute it. Trinity pushes the ball up the floor well. She is a hard worker and a good on the ball defender.
- Haley Ottenschnieder Haley Ottenschnieder 5'7" | CG Breese Central | 2023 State IL 5’6 Guard from Breese Central. Haley has great skill on the offensive end of the floor. She can shoot, can get to the hole and finish in the lane. She is very creative finding a clean shot by using her dribble and pivot foot in tight spaces. Haley uses her strength and positioning to rebound very well for her position.
- Kylie Kisgen Kylie Kisgen 5'6" | PG Freeburg | 2023 State IL 5’7 Point Guard from Freeburg. Kylie is a point guard that can also score the ball. She averaged 7.8 points per game for a very balanced team. Kylie got to the free line over 100 times and converted 70%. She handles the ball well but can also play along side another ball handler just as effectively. Kylie started the season on fire going for 11 and 19 in her first two varsity games.
- Megan Rennegarbe Megan Rennegarbe 5'9" | SF Okawville | 2023 State IL 5’8 Combo Guard from Okawville. Megan is a smooth guard that gets in the lane and scores well in mid range. She is still very thin but at 5’8 with long arms she shows the ability to defend and score. Megan can lull you to sleep as she seems to just glide on the floor. She can hit shots off the bounce or off the catch.
- Briley Rhodes Briley Rhodes 5'4" | CG Okawville | 2023 State IL 5’2 Guard from Okawville. Briley is a guard that can really fill it up. She was All Tourney at Nashville early in season and showed everyone what was to come. Briley averaged 13 points per game and shot 37% from behind the arc. She is strong and can handle the ball.
There are some solid prospects in this group. There are girls with good size for their position and the athleticism to play at a high level. In addition there is a group with very solid skill level for their age that will determine their level based on physical growth and increasing their athleticism. Hard work will ultimately determine what happens, but this group is on the right path.
