Who are the best players in the Fargo area?
For the sake of this exercise, the Fargo area includes the Fargo and West Fargo schools, the Casselton schools (Northern and Central Cass), Kindred and Richland.
Here’s a look at the top forwards in the area:
1.Taylor Fey, Fargo Davies
Fey emerged as one of the elite players in the EDC last year, averaging better than 15 points and eight rebounds while leading the Eagles to an EDC Tournament title and the semifinals of the Class A State Tournament. She saved some of her best performances for the best competition, including 32 points in a regular season win over Grand Forks Red River, 20 in a win over Devils Lake in the EDC Tournament and 18.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in two state tournament games. She’ll be the frontrunner for Player-of-the-Year in the EDC going into her senior year.
2.Moriku Hakim, Fargo Shanley
Hakim was a breakout player for the Deacons as a junior, averaging 13 points and nearly 10 rebounds per game while playing a pivotal role in helping Shanley reach the state title game. She’ll have a larger role in the offense as a senior with the Deacons losing their two best playmakers, so life will be tougher as a senior than it was this past season, but she’s got the athleticism and skill to be a force.
3.Ava Wild, Fargo Davies
Wild was the third fiddle for the Eagles last season as a sophomore, averaging nearly 10 points and nine rebounds for a team that was ranked among the best teams in the state all season. Her role won’t change much with the Eagles returning a bulk of its best players from a year ago including Fey and Ryleigh Wacha, but if she takes the big developmental step you see players take between their sophomore and junior years, and provides consistent double-double production, she’ll be a force and the Eagles will contend for a state title.
4.Terryn Johnson, Kindred
Johnson was an all-state selection as a sophomore, averaging better than 15 points and nine rebounds for the top-ranked Vikings. She was a key piece in their state championship run as a freshman and she’s continued to develop as an interior presence. She’s terrific defensively, protecting the paint and blocking shots and her ability to score inside is rare for an underclass forward. She’s a key component for a Kindred team that’ll be the favorite to win the next two state titles.
5.Jadyn Feist, West Fargo Sheyenne
Feist was a breakout star for a rebuilding West Fargo Sheyenne team last year, averaging nearly 14 points and nine rebounds per game. She was effective scoring on the interior despite not having a great deal of help in terms of spacing or players setting her up. Her activity level on the offensive glass allows her to produce efficiently and consistently.
6.Mirley Simon, West Fargo
Simon had a terrific freshman season for the Packers, averaging 10 points and 6.8 rebounds for a team that was in the mix for a state tournament berth late in the year. She’s long, athletic and efficient inside. If she continues to improve at the rate she’s already shown, she’s going to be one of elite players in the state before long and West Fargo is going to win a lot of games.
7.Decontee Smith, Central Cass
Central Cass was the surprise team of the Class B State Tournament and Smith was one of the breakout stars for the Squirrels in just her freshman season. On a team that went 10-11 deep regularly, she averaged nearly 10 points and six rebounds off the bench. Expect big things as she continues to develop.
