Leadership is about the respect you earned, it is about how you can influence others to follow and get what is needed to be done. Each year there are always a player or players that stand apart from everyone else on there team. These players are the ones that posses the attributes of a leader. Their leadership is proven by how they lead by their example, communicate with their teammates and coaches, how they react during times of adversity, and how in those times, they can pull others together to accomplish a common goal.
Here are the 10 best leaders in NC high school basketball.
Reiven Douglas – Milbrook High – She simply works hard to help her team be the best that they possibly can be. As the team’s most consistent player throughout the season, Douglas already was leading through her examples that she set on and off the court. Her influence throughout her team made a great impact throughout the season. Douglas solid grind it out play, that comes with doing what ever is needed for her team to be successful, is one of her greatest assets she posses as a player. Her leadership was a big reason to why Mill Brook reached the state Regions this year. So as I reflect back on the season I can only see Reiven Douglas being the best leader on the court at any giving time, that’s why she is my pick for the best leader in North Carolina girls high school basketball.
Nyla Cooper – Jack Britt High – Cooper is a hard-nosed team leader for the Buccuneers. She is one of the best teams floor general in high school basketball. Heading into the 2019-20 basketball season Cooper was at Terry Sanford and decided to transfer to Jack Britt, and when she did she brough her firey leadership style over to Britt, giving them and extral edge and a consitent leadership each day, and each game.
TJ Eichelburger – St. Paul High – Eichelburger is an instant leader for the St. Paul Bulldogs. She has been respected by her teammates from the day one. Eichelburger has been making big-time plays from the first games of the season. She leads the team in scoring. Her ability to confidently perform under most and any circumstance has established her influence on the team, and has garnered her the respect of coaches, players and the media.
Sydney Barker Sydney Barker 5'6" | PG Jordan | 2023 State NC – Jordan High – Sydney Barker Sydney Barker 5'6" | PG Jordan | 2023 State NC is a blue-collar team leader, who literally does whatever it takes to help Jordan high to win. she commands the team with her consistent verbal communication. Craft makes her biggest impact on the offensive end. she is known by many to be one of the best off-ball directors in the game. The freshman PG is very mature and focus and ensures the team gets what is needed to compete. But she is off the charts in terms of toughness and competitiveness.
Lavariah Armstead – Trinity Christian – With all of the talent and experience on this year’s Trinity Christian, one of the main reasons why they have risen to the top of the NCISSA SAC is Lavariah Armstead’s leadership. As a junior, she has already earned the trust of her team and the respect of opposing coaches. Lavariah is probably the key to the teams motor. She knows her role, she has an unselfish spirit and the ball is safe in her hands. She plays like a coach on the floor. She’ll defer, but you can’t back off of her, and she’s confident enough that when she needs to make things happen, she’s capable of it.
– Purnell Swett – Watching Natalie Evington in this year’s season was like watching a captain running its ship. Chavis was an absolute solid player this season for her team. She displayed not only her tremendous skill, but her leadership as well, as the rest of her team followed her lead as they competed throughout the season.
Diamond Thomas Diamond Thomas 5'4" | PG Knightdale | 2021 NC Knights Dale High – Thomas is a speedy tough point guard with a lot of experience. She has proved herself as a starter over the last two seasons and has been able to guide her team into playoff contention. Thomas leadership assited with leading Knights Dale to a conference title. She consistenly provides the type of leadership and guidance to her team in crucial situations on and off the floor when needed.
Ayanna Williams – Seventy First High -Williams has been the leader of the Falcons since the beginning of the year. she has set the tone for their effort and tough style of play for the last two years. Sophomore skill on both ends of the floor has helped Seventy First finish 2nd in the conference the last two years. She is encouraging all the time pushing her teammates to comepete at a high level.
Teonni Key Teonni Key 6'3" | PF Cary | 2021 #21 Nation NC s – Cary High – Keys just leads by example simply put. Her on and off the court leadership is a crucial need for her team. Use to having her sister their by her side, she had to truly learn how to compete at a high level this year and encouraging her teammates to do the same. Her consistent play and leadership assisted with Keys exceptional play this season.
Jada Douthit – Heritage High – Douthit who simply is quited in nature, but leads through her example on and off the court. If you are a teammate of hers you can’t help yourself to be strucken by how she is humble and able to work so hard. When she is on the court she gives her team another coach on th floor. The sophomore guard does what ever it is that her teams needs. She displays true leadership traits of what a leader is.
