These girls were able to use their court vision, basketball knowledge, passing ability, and athleticism to create open shots or easy layups in transition for their teammates, giving them a time to shine and a chance to win games. Here is Southwest Virginias Top 10 assist leaders from the area:
Mya Blizzard – 2021 – Franklin County
2019-20 Stats: 123 assists, 5.9 per game
Mya is a 5’10 guard who attacks the basket relentlessly, causing the defense to collapse on her. She uses her skills to be able to find her teammates and dish it off to them for open layups.
Abi Easter – 2020 – Carroll County
2019-20 Stats: 105 assists, 5.7 per game
Abi is a 5’2 speedy guard who can run the offense by running the floor and finding her teammates in transition. She knows how to move the ball and find the open players who are able to knock down their shots.
Catherine Kagey – 2020 – Faith Christian
2019-20 Stats: 88 assists, 4.9 per game
Catherine is a 5’10 guard who can handle the ball very well for her size, controlling the offense with her high basketball IQ. She is able to penetrate and get into the lane, either scoring or dropping dimes, dishing out over 360 assists in her career.
Shelby Fiddler – 2022 – Patrick Henry
2019-20 Stats: 84 assists, 4.4 per game
Shelby is a very skilled and creative 5’9 guard who knows the game of basketball. She is able to run the pick and roll very well, knowing how to place the ball to her big as she rolls. Shelby is also able to drive and kick to open players or find someone cutting down the lane if the defense keys in on her.
Zada Porter – 2021 – Cave Spring
2019-20 Stats: 79 assists, 4.4 per game
Zada is a crafty 5’10 guard who has a very high skill set, she plays the game on a different level with her ball-handling, athleticism, court vision. She can penetrate and kick, make long transition passes, and find open players with a no-look or behind the back pass.
Michaela Fiscus – 2020 – Rural Retreat
2019-20 Stats: 80 assists, 4.2 per game
Michaela is a 5’3 high energy guard who plays aggressively on both sides of the ball. She uses her intense defense to get steals and make smart outlet passes in transition. Michaela uses her shooting ability to make the defense focus on her, while she is able to find the open players or cutters.
Maddie Ratcliff – 2020 – Pulaski County
2019-20 Stats: 78 assists, 4.1 per game
Maddie is a 5’9 point guard who can control the tempo of the game. She is a scorer who loves to set up her teammates and get them going, using her court vision to read the defense and take what they give her. I have watched her play several times the last few seasons and she is a joy to watch.
Jada Dean – 2021 – Radford
2019-20 Stats: 68 assists, 4.0 per game
Jada is a 5’4 guard who goes out and plays hard throughout the game, creating open shots for her teammates or finding open cutters as she goes to the hole.
Savannah Derey – 2021 – Patrick Henry
2019-20 Stats: 70 assists, 3.7 per game
Savannah is a 6’1 forward who can handle the ball and do all the things on the floor. She uses her length to keep the ball high on smaller players, allowing her to see the floor and find the open player. Savannah creates attention with her intense play and playmaking ability, which she uses to set her teammates up for easy buckets.
Sophia Chrisley – 2023 – William Byrd
2019-20 Stats: 64 assists, 3.4 per game
Sophia is a 5’8 guard who controls the flow of the game when her high basketball IQ, she uses her defense to cause turnovers and makes the right plays in transition. Sophia can knock down shots consistently from behind the arc, allowing her to put the ball on the floor and get into the lane, in which she has the ability to kick it out to the open player or find someone cutting back door.
