Hill City has an extremely underrated point guard that highlights the group. And Warner with a 2024 prospect to really get excited about. This is a fun list with a good mixture of prospect talents and class ranges. Let’s get to the list.
List of games reviewed to construct this article:
*Colman-Egan vs Howard * Colman-Egan vs Dell Rapids St. Mary * Northwestern vs Aberdeen Christian * Hill City vs Sturgis Brown * Warner vs Leola-Frederick * Warner vs Sully Buttes *
Kadyn Comer – Hill City – (5’5/G/2021) – Kadyn highlights this list as she is one of the most overlooked players in the state of South Dakota. A really impressive understanding of how to play the point guard position. A true point guard that runs the show for Hill City. A two-way player that takes pride on the defensive side of the ball. She really pressures the ball; but in a controlled manner, not overextending herself and getting beat off the bounce. Not a big-time scorer but that is by choice as she likes to get everyone involved in the offense. Plays with good tempo as she can slow down the offense but also turn it on and create instant fast breaks for her team. Can get into the teeth of the defense off the drive and is a play-maker immediately. One of the best passers in the state. She and can make half court passes on a dime to her teammates running the floor. Gets in lane and dumps off accurate passes to teammates inside. Kadyn’s best skill might be her ability to make steals to create more possessions and fast break opportunities for her team. Because of the location of Hill City, she may be overlooked but she really needs your attention.
Elizabeth Moore – Colman-Egan – (5’5/G/2021) – An explosive athlete that is a great anticipatory defender. Really locks down and makes impactful defensive plays. Smooth and quick movement ability that allows her to defend with ease and force turnovers. Plays an aggressive style defense, pressuring the ball-handler relentlessly. Gets on the floor for loose 50/50 balls. Comes up with a ton of steals. A fairly raw offensively player and ball-handler. Really attacks the defense to get in the lane all game. Plays full speed with the ball and occasionally loses handle on the ball. A lot of untapped offensive potential with her athleticism if she hones her craft. Needs to develop her shooting stroke.
Braiden Westley – Colman-Egan- (5’7/G-F/2021) – Braiden plays extremely hard on the court. A high energy and strong guard/forward tweener type player. Has an effective inside and outside game with an accurate three-point shot, but is slightly inconsistent at times. Mirrors the ball-handler aggressively, making it hard to find post touches. Closes out relentlessly on shooters, affecting their jump-shots. Not afraid to pull-the-trigger or shoot off balance shots, such as step backs. Braiden is an offensive threat as she is not shy with the ball or scared to put it up from deep range.
Hannah Schentzel – Northwestern – (5’9/G/2021) – Hannah brings the ball up the court for Northwestern. Maybe not a true point guard at the next level but could handle the role if need be. A skilled guard that takes care of the ball and makes good decisions with it. Really composed and doesn’t rush herself when possessing the ball. Hannah really understands the game. Really nice shooting stroke from three and doesn’t force any bad threes up. Not an overly explosive athlete. Great at cleanly passing the ball inside in the post area. Not exceptional top speed but still moves well enough. Gets in a good defensive positioning on the court but plays a little too high. Really understands gap help and help defense. A great team defense mentality. Not a perfect ball handler but still handles it fairly well.
Abby Siemonsma – Hill City – (5’7/G/2022) – A solid and extremely sound guard overall. An extremely sound defender and you can see that she is a very focused and alert defender. She is always in good defensive position, both on-ball and off-ball. Off the ball she will deny the pass and make the offense player relocate to a new spot. Offensively, she is able to handle the ball with both hands; passes with both as well. Abby is a underrated prospect for sure as she doesn’t immediately stand out but if you watch her closely she hardly ever makes mistakes and simply plays her role to perfection. Picks up full-court and will deny the ball after the ball-handler passes the ball away.
Mackenzie Hemmer – Colman-Egan – (5’10/F-C/2022) – Really like this prospect. An exceptional and versatile player. Mackenzie possesses great movement skills and energy; doing it all on the floor. Moves extremely well laterally, easily staying in front of guards on the perimeter. A really vicious and aggressive rebounder that attacks the ball. Runs the floor well with a purpose to get to her spot and early positioning. Finishes inside very well through contact and commands a lot of defensive attention when posting/pinning defenders. Tracks down a high number of offensive rebounds because of her effort and determination for the ball.
Whitney Edwards – Hill City – (5’10/F-C/2022) – Whitney is the toughness and grit of her Hill City squad. A high energy prospect with an athletic and strong build. A prospect that should easily transition as a four/power forward at the next level. Whitney battles hard in the post for positioning advantage on her opponents. Whitney has a strong base and is always in an athletic position to always be ready and to have an advantage. A shot blocker and shot alter-er. Runs the floor pretty well. Defensively, she makes deflections and tips on post entries. Not afraid to defend on the perimeter and hold her own at that. She rushes a little when she gets the ball inside the paint and affects her ability to finish at a consistent rate. Has a nice shooting stroke that extends to the three-point line. Finishes at the free-throw line as well. If Whitney progresses to improve her ability to finish through contact she could become an overall solid prospect.
Ella Griffin – Dell Rapids St. Mary – (5’9/G/2023) – A young, developing prospect that clearly understands the game. A starter as a freshmen. Versus Colman-Eagan, Ella showed an insanely quick right-to-left crossover into a pull-up two-point shot. Ability to drive to her left and zip a quick pass with her hand as well. Overall, a skilled prospect with years to grow and develop. Average quickness. Doesn’t get in the face of the ball-handler, focusing more on containing and staying in front. A great teammate, as she runs to help her teammates off the floor if they hit the deck.
Kendyl Anderson – Warner (5’10/G-F/2023) – A smart and heady player. Kendyl is a good decision maker as a passer and is a set-shooter, extending to the three-point line. Not a twitchy athlete but moves well enough to get the job done. Plays within the offense, moves the ball well without turning it over, and has great shot selection. Lines up three-pointers with accuracy.
Ava Nilsson – Warner – (5’9/G/2024) – A talented up-and-coming prospect for the Warner Monarchs. Ava has a long build with a good wing-span. An active player that has good energy and is constantly on the move. A crafty guard that puts up a ton of different type of shots in the lane. Has the ability to play the point and a wing spot. A long-strider that moves on the court with ease. She can handle the rock and create separation from the defense on her own. Ava really has the ability to fly around and make defensive pressures on-ball and off-ball. A slasher with the ball, who looks to drive and kick to outside shooters for three. A little right hand dominant when bringing the ball up the court and trying to relieve pressure. A very active defender that plays the passing lanes hard. Could stand to be more aggressive as a scorer but that should come with time. Ava has a bright future and could really develop into an all-around and complete player.
