I’ve had the luxury of seeing a ton of dynamic playmakers this season with a knack for getting their teammates involved on the offensive end, and I wanted to shed some light on these unsung heroes.
With that in mind, here are five of the best passers in Texas:
Cammie McKinney Cammie McKinney 5'6" | PG Frisco Memorial | 2022 State TX – 2022 5’7” Point Guard (Drive Nation 16U EYBL) Hebron HS – McKinney rarely allows the ball to stick to her. She is an unselfish teammate who makes smart decisions when she is running the offense. The 2022 prospect operated as a pass first point guard as a sophomore. She will surely have more opportunities to be a scorer as an upperclassman, but this past season afforded her with the chance to refine her facilitating skills.
Isabella Earle Isabella Earle 5'8" | SG Denton Guyer | 2021 State TX – 2021 5’10” Combo Guard Denton Guyer HS – The soon-to-be senior will likely continue to split time with Evie Goetz Evie Goetz 5'11" | SF Denton Guyer | 2021 State TX as Guyer’s primary ball handler during her senior campaign. Earle is the more traditional guard of the two. I’ve seen her make some impressive cross court passes while also delivering accurate dishes to cutting teammates. She is a willing passer with some flash to her game. It makes her a ton of fun to watch.
Griffyn Young – 2021 5’4” Point Guard Plano West HS – Young is a visible leader on the court. She knows where her teammates are on the floor and consistently puts them in advantageous situations. She is great at anticipating what her opponents are going to do and always seems to be a step or two ahead of defenders. Plano West’s lead guard is as savvy as they come.
Michayla Gatewood Michayla Gatewood 5'8" | PG DeSoto | 2022 State TX – 2022 5’8” Point Guard (Team Lex Gold) DeSoto HS – Gatewood is a talented scorer in her own right, but she is wise enough to understand that she is surrounded by a ton of great players. She never neglects her responsibilities as a distributor. Her drive and kick skills are tremendous. The floor general excels at drawing multiple defenders toward her and finding an open teammate in the paint for an easy two or in the corner for an open three.
Autumn Smith Autumn Smith 5'6" | PG Arlington Martin | 2021 State TX – 2021 5’6” Point Guard Arlington Martin HS – Smith is an athletic one-guard who can make every pass in the book. She is an athletic prospect who does not sacrifice accuracy when making transition passes while moving at full speed. Her vision is excellent. She doesn’t get tunnel vision when she gets downhill. Smith plays fast, but she plays smart, and that earned her a spot on this list.
