Who are the best players in the Grand Forks area?
For the sake of this exercise, the Grand Forks area includes the Grand Forks schools, Grafton, Thompson, Hillsoro/Central Valley, Midway/Minto and Larimore.
1.MacKenzie Hughes, Thompson
Hughes already has a pair of all-state honors to her name and she’s been the catalyst for the Tommies for a while now. The 5-foot-5 senior-to-be is one of the best two-way players in the state, not only driving offense for a team that lacks high-octane scoring prowess but also spearheading an elite defense. She’s a solid shooter, excellent at getting into the paint, makes plays at a high level and controls the game as well as anybody in the state.
2.Carlee Sieben, Grafton,
Sieben led the Spoilers to the state title game in her junior year and will head into her senior season as the clear go-to player for the No. 1 or No. 2 team in Class B. She averaged 20 points and nearly five assists per game a year ago, and does just about everything well. She can shoot it, get to the rim, make plays for her teammates and defend. She’s not just one of the best players in the Grand Forks area, but the state altogether.
3.Elizabeth Schanilec, Midway/Minto
Schanilec has been one of the most productive players in the area for a few years running and has a chance to put together one more monster year together for Midway/Minto. She’s got good size for a guard, scores from all levels on the floor, plays defense and makes the game easier for her teammates. Midway/Minto is a fringe top-10 team in Class B heading into next year and Schanilec has all-state potential.
4.Alex Page, Grand Forks Red River
Page was the second leading scorer for the Roughriders in her junior season, averaging 10 points and nearly six rebounds per game. She’s one of the best shooters in the state, as she knocked down better than 45 percent of her 3-pointers last year. Expect a big senior year from Page, leading the Roughriders who have the talent to contend in the EDC.
5.Cassie Sieben, Grafton
Sieben took a solid step as an upperclassman, averaging 10 points per game while providing solid complementary playmaking, shooting and top-notch perimeter defense. She’s been a key cog in the Spoilers’ success each of the last two years and played a big part in helping them reach the state title game this past season. Her role won’t change a whole lot in her final year, but if her effectiveness continues to rise, the Spoilers might be a title favorite.
6.Ella Fosse, Grand Forks Red River
Fosse averaged nearly five assists per game for the Roughriders last season, playing a key role in the team’s run to the state tournament. Her defense is a huge asset, as her ability to not only pressure the passing lanes but also the ball helps set the tone for an elite defensive team. If she can take a step as a scorer, she’ll be one of the best all-around guards in the EDC.
