We will be using the region’s from last season as they were constructed. Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible. We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges. We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2022’s who could breakout this upcoming season.

– 5’10 SF – BCLUW
Engle caught my attention this past winter and after a solid sophomore year she should be able to parlay that into an excellent junior season. Engle scored 11 points a game this past season and grabbed 5.8 rebounds a contest. With both the leading scorer and rebounder gone due to graduation, Engle has a ton of room to step up and lead this team. I expect a big season from her next season.
Lauren Donlea

– 5’4 PG – East Buchanan
East Buchanan loses a lot of talent but right there to fill the void of all the outgoing guards is Donlea. She scored 6.5 points a game last season but more importantly grabbed 5.0 steals a game and dished off 4.8 assists a game. She’s a quick guard who has a lot of talent and now that she can take reins of the offense she will flourish next season.
Grace Finger

AGWSR | 2022
State
IA
– 5’11 PF – AGWSR
Finger showed flashes last season of breaking out and this year I think she finally should. She scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds a contest last year and I see no reason that can’t rise to double-double territory. She finishes well on the inside and is strong enough to play with any forward on their schedule. Look for Finger to have a good season next year and help take AGWSR to new heights.
Emma Weiner – 5’2 PG – Newman Catholic
Being a point guard you need to be able to pass the ball and Weiner can certainly do that. She dished off 2.4 assists a game last season while scoring 3.7 points a game. For Newman Catholic to take the next step this season she’s going to have to become a more integral part of the offense especially after they lost good senior talent. She should see an expanded role this year.
Meg Thompson – 5’7 SG – North Butler
Thompson scored 6.6 points a game and North Butler loses two of their leading scorers. Thompson should be able to step in and up her scoring average next year and will need to do so to have North Butler reach new heights. Thompson grabbed 2.2 rebounds a year and threw out 1.3 assists per game. She should have a breakout this season as she becomes more comfortable.
