Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible.
We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges.
We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2023’s who need to be on your radar.
Delaney Scherf Delaney Scherf 5'7" | PG Central Elkader | 2023 State IA – G – Central Elkader
The future appears very bright at Central Elkader, as the roster boasted a pair of high-level freshmen this past season led by Delaney Scherf Delaney Scherf 5'7" | PG Central Elkader | 2023 State IA .
Scherf, a guard, scored a region-best 257 points for ninth graders. She also added 99 rebounds, 53 steals, 45 assists and 12 blocks despite coming off the bench.
Along with shooting almost 44 percent from the field, Scherf also knocked down 26 three-pointers and worked her way to the free throw line 84 times, making 75 percent of those attempts.
Haley Frieden – G – Central Elkader
The second piece to the youth movement at Central Elkader, Haley Frieden started 20 of 25 games this past winter and scored 220 points. That number was second in the region, as only her teammate, Delaney Scherf Delaney Scherf 5'7" | PG Central Elkader | 2023 State IA , posted more.
Frieden, a guard like Scherf, added 121 rebounds, 24 steals, 24 blocks and 20 assists. Nearly half of her made field goals came from behind the 3-point line, where she knocked down 36 triples.
Joy Beran – F/G – Riceville
Riceville’s Joy Beran played all over the court this past year in her first season of high school basketball. And she did so very well, scoring 215 total points with 138 rebounds.
Beran added in 51 steals, 33 assists and 23 blocks, knocking down 34 percent of her field goals and 10 triples.
Madison Hillman Madison Hillman 6'1" | PF Saint Ansgar | 2023 State IA – F – Saint Ansgar
Freshman Madison Hillman Madison Hillman 6'1" | PF Saint Ansgar | 2023 State IA was a welcome addition to the Saint Ansgar lineup, posting seven points and nearly five rebounds a night.
Hillman also added in 35 blocks and 17 steals for the team, paving a perfect path to an even bigger sophomore season to come. She was the top shooter in terms of percentage for her class in the region, burying almost 48 percent of her attempts.
Mallory Mueller – F – Tripoli
There was nothing but a smooth transition into prep basketball for Mallory Mueller, as the Tripoli freshman scored 128 points and added 113 rebounds this past winter.
Mueller also chipped in 44 steals and 29 assists while learning on the job. She was not afraid to put up her shot, but one can expect her percentages to improve after a season of work.
