Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible.
We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges.
We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2023’s who need to be on your radar.
Jenna Stephens Jenna Stephens 6'0" | C Stanton | 2023 State IA – F – Stanton
It was a breakout season for Stanton, which featured a number of underclassmen that are sure to provide a bright future.
That includes freshman Jenna Stephens Jenna Stephens 6'0" | C Stanton | 2023 State IA , the top scorer for the Viqueens. She was one of five Stanton players to score at least 200 points this past season, with four of the five set to return.
Stephens shot nearly 40 percent from the field, buried 27 three-pointers and added 127 rebounds with 57 steals and 29 blocks.
Emily Williams Emily Williams 5'8" | SF East Mills | 2023 State IA – F – East Mills
Four of the five regular starters for East Mills this past season were members of the Class of 2023, including forward Emily Williams Emily Williams 5'8" | SF East Mills | 2023 State IA .
Williams was second on the team with 258 total points and 155 rebounds, adding a team-high 101 steals, 37 assists and 13 blocks.
On the year, she shot 43 percent from the floor and added a handful of three-pointers. Williams also got to the line 100 times.
Quinn Grubbs Quinn Grubbs 5'5" | PG Exira EHK | 2023 State IA – Exira-EHK
Exira-EHK was one step away from fulfilling a state tournament run, reaching the Region 7 championship before coming up short against Council Bluffs St. Albert.
Quinn Grubbs Quinn Grubbs 5'5" | PG Exira EHK | 2023 State IA , a freshman, was second on the team at 10.5 points per game. The Spartans featured three players in double figures, and all three are set to return.
Grubbs shot 50 percent from the field, 61 percent from the free throw line and 34 percent from the 3-point stripe, adding 86 rebounds, 57 steals and 44 assists.
Taylor Lumbard – F – Diagonal
The top freshman rebounder in the region, Taylor Lumbard grabbed 10.5 boards per game – with almost four of them coming on the offensive glass.
Lumbard was also the third-leading scorer for Diagonal at eight points per game, adding 39 assists, 23 steals and 16 blocks.
Marleigh Johnson – G – Stanton
Stanton’s Marleigh Johnson was one of two freshman in the region to surpass 80 assists and 70 steals.
Johnson finished her first season with the Viqueens with 205 points, 115 rebounds, 85 steals, 73 assists and 12 blocks, shooting 44 percent from the field.
