Some are under the radar, others provide the scoring spark for their team, and some collect the boards in the paint. I give you, five “first looks” into the Class of 2022 in this three-part series.
Autumn Schroenrock, Forward, Royalton
Schroenrock is a 6’1 prospect with very long arms. As you will see on film, she uses them well defensively. The range of shooting for Schroenrock totally varies from everywhere, but she has a great looking shot from beyond the arc. She averaged 7.6 points per game as a sophomore for the senior-heavy Royalton Royals that made it to the section semifinals last season before losing to South Dakota State commit Paige Meyer Paige Meyer 5'6" | PG Albany | 2021 State MN and Albany in a down to the wire game I witnessed at St. John’s.
Kaylee Hunter, Guard, Minnesota Valley Lutheran
Hunter may be 5’4 but she certainly doesn’t play like it. Hunter runs the floor well in transition. She shows off her range of shooting three-pointers beyond the arc from well past the line. She can cut to the basket and pave her own way to scoring. What did I love most about her film? The charge she took, which is such a rare find in any film I have watched. Kaylee averaged 6.6 points per game for the 20-6 Chargers from Minnesota Valley Lutheran, located in New Ulm.
Shelby Mortenson, Center, Yellow Medicine East
When I first searched Mortenson’s films all the highlights I saw were blocks, blocks, and more blocks. Mortenson holds her own in the paint and is a stout rebounder. She doesn’t show a ton of range from outside the free-throw line, but is certainly a bruiser in the paint. Shelby averaged over 11 points per game and almost 8 rebounds last season for Yellow Medicine East located in Granite Falls.
Brooklynn VerSteeg, Guard, Luverne
VerSteeg is a very speedy 5’5 guard for the Cardinals who also runs cross country, and track and field, so she also has excellent stamina baseline to baseline. VerSteeg’s shot has a very quick follow through, which makes her an elusive shooter from just about anywhere on the court. VerSteeg was the second-leading scorer for the Cardinals last season but also showed poise with double-digit games in rebounds and in the steals department. Expect another big year from VerSteeg as Luverne looks to climb from their 17-9 season last year.
Isabella Jensen, Guard, Apple Valley
Jensen has a great ability to catch and shoot from beyond the arc. My favorite part on her tape is at the 1:04 mark when she shows that she can take to the hoop on Minnesota’s best big in the Class of 2021, Farmington’s Sophie Hart Sophie Hart 6'4" | C Farmington | 2021 State #44 Nation MN . Jensen shows that she is also a fluent cutter to the bucket. The Eagles of Apple Valley will lose their top two scorers in Kalena Myers Kalena Myers 5'6" | CG Apple Valley | 2020 State MN (Augsburg Commit) and Anna Mutch Anna Mutch 5'8" | CG Apple Valley | 2020 State MN (UW-Stout) to graduation so the guard play of Jensen, and 2021 PGH Minnesota top-60 guard Chyna Young Chyna Young 5'7" | SG Apple Valley | 2021 State MN will carry a bigger load next season for the team that finished 11-15.
