Continue ReadingMid America Youth Basketball (MAYB) had hoped to offer their first Wichita tournament of the season this weekend. Unfortunately state level politics got in the way late in the week, turning the event into a series of scrimmages. Teams from Kansas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma comprised the small field that took to the courts of the Wichita Sports Forum. Relief and excitement to finally hit the floors was abundantly felt among the teams, family members, and even the officials. GameBall Basketball is one the teams I will be sharing player evaluations for. It will be the first of a series of player evaluations by team or program to be shared.
Breckyn Haar Breckyn Haar 5'9" | PF Hugoton | 2022 State KS , Hugoton, 5’9″, F, 2022 — Early on Haar did not look for her own shot off the high post, instead looking for the go player following her being given the ball. She became more offensive minded from game two on, showing an ability to get shots off quickly off the catch, good use of the glass, and using power dribbles from outside the block to create. Haar is a consistently solid post defender and rebounder.
Ashley Carrillo Ashley Carrillo 5'7" | PG Liberal | 2022 State KS , Liberal, 5’7″, SG, 2022 — Carrillo played the point at times. She is fast with the ball, has quick feet, and anticipates well on the defensive end to jump passing lanes. She showed the ability to look off a defender before attacking from the wing, use her quick first step to get into the lane from the top of the key.
Rylie Hallman, Liberal, W, 5’6″, SG, 2023 — Played some point guard but needs to improve to play the position consistently. She runs well, is athletic, can dribble with speed, and uses an effective baseline drive to create.
Gianna Vos Gianna Vos 5'9" | SG Hugoton | 2023 State KS , Hugoton, 5’7″, CG, 2023 — Vos moved well without the ball and overall showed her speed and quickness. One moment showed a variety of abilities. Off of a jumped passing lane on the wing yielded a steal, she took off down the sideline with speed. She started to slash to the basket against transitioning defenders but instead pulled it out, drew attention, then quickly hit a teammate on the block for a layup.
Amaya Gallegos Amaya Gallegos 5'8" | PG Garden City | 2023 State KS , Dodge City, 5’7″, CG, 2022 — Gallegos showed an ability to slash across the lane left to right, then use the glass to score mid-lane. She has a strong looking three-point shot from a set position. Gallegos elevates well on her jumper. She also defends the slipper off the screen well and with physicality.
Amaya Perez Amaya Perez 5'7" | CG Dodge City | 2022 State KS , Dodge City, 5’7″, CG, 2022 — Perez moved well without the ball and showed three point range. She elevated well on her jumper. Has the ability to change direction very quickly, including off a steal in transition.
Elle Hatcher, Liberal, 5’10″, SF, 2024 — Battles well on the box out. Struggled laterally to defend on the perimeter. Good offensive rebounder from 8’-10’ on a teammates shot. Showed nearly 24’ range on a made three.
Jaden Wilson, Dodge City, 5’10″, SG, 2024 — Strong ability to baseline drive. Can pull up nicely off it. Needs to especially box out on the perimeter.
Hailey Contreras, Liberal, 5’4″, PG, 2024 — Contreras was a good, quick, fast, off-ball defender. She is stronger in the back court than 1-on-1 on the perimeter. Very fast with the ball, uses glass well on the finish. Quickly got by defenders on the wing and had good vision on the bounce.
McKayla Miller McKayla Miller 6'1" | CG Cimarron | 2023 State KS , Cimarron, 6’0″, CG, 2023 — Miller showed many different abilities on both ends of the floor, including setting good screens. She showed strong ball skills in the half court including a behind-the-back with a whirl. Miller finished athletically on contested shots. Defensively she boxed out well, showed shot blocking ability versus drivers, and footwork to give ground versus a ball handler in transition. Would like to see her play more downhill.
