Continue ReadingMid America Youth Basketball (MAYB) had hoped to offer their first Wichita tournament of the season this weekend. Unfortunately, as I mentioned in the first article in this series, state level politics got in the way late in the week, turning the event into a series of scrimmages. Kansas’s Twin Lakes Stars was one the small field of teams, that also included programs from Arkansas and Oklahoma, that took to the courts of the Wichita Sports Forum. This is the second in a series of evaluations of players I saw to be shared by team or program.
Morgan Meyers Morgan Meyers 5'5" | CG Cunningham | 2021 State KS , Cunningham, 5’5″, PG, 2022 — Meyers showed herself to be a strong, quicker passer including off the dribble as well someone who can finish under pressure. She showed good off-ball vision and anticipation to jump passing lanes. Has the ability to go end-to-end in attack mode.
Kali Briar Kali Briar 5'7" | PG Sterling | 2022 State KS , Sterling, 5’5″, PG, 2022 — Briar showed herself to be a well-rounded threat on both ends of the floor. She was able use good court vision to advance the ball up the floor on the break and quickly get off a soft three point shot. She also showed athleticism and some scorer mentality in a half-court basket attack where she split two defenders near the basket and scored off a scoop shot…and was fouled. Briar consistently attacked weak defenders. Defensively, she was always on opposing point guards. Given who she was playing with, that is a statement.
Kassie Miller Kassie Miller 5'6" | CG Golden Plains | 2022 State KS , Golden Plains, 5’6″, SG, 2022 — Where Miller distinguished herself was on the defensive end. Including against bigger, physical opponents she aggressively battled cutters and to gain or sustain position on in-bounds plays.
Lili Shubert Lili Shubert 5'8" | SG Trego | 2021 State KS , Trego, 5’8″, SG, 2021 — Schubert showed the ability to get into the lane off the bounce from the top of the key but where she stood out was with rebounding. She followed her own shot well and consistently jumped to the ball to gather boards. Schubert also showed physical strength on both ends of the floor.
Lauryn Dubbert Lauryn Dubbert 5'7" | CG Beloit/St. John's-Tipton | 2021 State KS , St. Johns/Tipton, 5’7′, CG/SF, 2021 — Dubbert showed herself to be the most dominant player of the scrimmages. She did so many things well that teams struggled to physically match up. Bigger players were put on her to match her strength, but could not deal with her quickness. Similar-sized or smaller, quicker players could not match her strength. Neither player type had anything for her scoring ability and athleticism. She has quick hands and defensively follows the ball with them very well. Dubbert anticipates passes on the perimeter, shoots the three consistently and quickly, and finishes well in transition knowing there were chasers on her heals.
Tessa Hauser Tessa Hauser 6'2" | PF Norton | 2021 State KS , Norton, 6’2″, PF, 2021 — Hauser had a bit of a slow start but the longer the day went the more aspects of her game appeared. Hauser has good size and length to take up a large amount of space posting up. She was not flashy but solid and effective with and without the ball. Among the moves shown were an interior ball fake and up-and-under move and a running hook off the bounce down the lane. She also stays with her own shot. While good, she could be a really strong rebounder. What I would like to see is increased lateral quickness to defend small forwards with and evidence of a perimeter shooting game. Substantial upside here.
Josena Frame Josena Frame 5'5" | PG Kinsley | 2020 State KS , Kinsley, 5’5″, CG, 2020 — This was my first time seeing Frame since she and Kansas City Kansas Community College guard Aliyah Myers Aliyah Myers 5'4"? | CG Derby | 2019 State KS (Derby, ’19) went at each other in an early tournament game last summer. Frame showed then she was the superior defender and was unafraid to consistently go at someone. She has only improved defensively and showed increased diversity to her game. Frame showed speed, athleticism, and improved passing ability. This strong half-court defender should do well with Northwest Oklahoma State University this fall.
