To me, a True Point Guard is a player whose first look isn’t to score, but rather gets teammates involved, takes care of the ball, controls the offense, and plays sound defense. While some of the players listed here can score as well, I consider them to very much fit the definition of a True Point Guard.
2021 Kenzie Senffner, 5’4” Guard, Yorkville
Senffner is a high-IQ PG who plays with excellent pace and court vision. She can shoot the ball well from the outside and score in the lane when needed, but her ability to anticipate her teammates movements and make tough passes make her a complete threat on offense.
2022 Kira Chivers Kira Chivers 5'3" | PG Marist | 2022 State IL , 5’3” Guard, Marist
There aren’t many ball-handlers around who control the ball with as much speed and quickness as Chivers. She’s a pass-first PG who loves to use that speed to push the ball in transition and set up her teammates. Kira is also an above average shooter from deep and uses some crafty moves in the lane to score at the rim.
2022 Mia Caccitolo, 5’7” Guard, Fenwick
Mia is a strong PG who makes a big impact on both ends of the court. She’s a sound ball-handler who isn’t afraid to drive in traffic or knock down open shots. Defensively, Caccitolo disrupts passing lanes regularly and makes things tough for opposing PG’s trying to get into the offense.
2022 Sophie Sullivan Sophie Sullivan 5'7" | PG Willowbrook | 2022 State IL , 5’8” Guard, Montini
Sullivan is widely regarded as one of the best all-around PG’s in the area thanks to her strong ball-handling skills and tough on-ball defense. She uses her athleticism and strength to get past defenders and make plays in the lane, and can be a true threat from beyond the three point line.
2022 Nora Ahram Nora Ahram 5'5" | PG Saint Viator | 2022 State IL , 5’5” Guard, Saint Viator
Nora is a skilled True PG who averaged nearly 5 assists per game as a Sophomore. Her ball-handling moves make it tough for defenders to stay in front of her, and once she gets past she makes good decisions when looking to score or pass. Defensively she consistently shows a willingness to rebound and anticipate passes to come away with steals.
2021 Mary Kate Fahey Mary Kate Fahey 5'7" | PG Hersey | 2021 State IL , 5’8” Guard, Hersey
Like Sullivan, Fahey is also recognized as one of the top all-around PG’s in the area. She’s very smart and uses good angles when driving through the defense. Mary Kate can score at all levels and her passing and ball-handling is as good as it gets, as shown by her outstanding assist to turnover ratio.
2021 Lauren Cohen Lauren Cohen 5'8" | PG Glenbard South | 2021 State IL , 5’8” Guard, Glenbard South
The Illinois State commit is the ultimate True PG with her ability to run the offense successfully and involve her teammates. Cohen has the ability to be a knock down shooter and drive the lane, but her leadership and basketball IQ make her a valuable asset to any team.
2021 Eliot Dojutrek Eliot Dojutrek 5'8" | CG Prospect | 2021 State IL , 5’8” Guard, Prospect
Dojutrek is a strong ball-handler with a terrific all-around game. She consistently does a nice job of playing within herself and taking what the defense gives her. Defensively she is extremely valuable because she can use her strength and length to guard various types of offensive players.
2021 Elana Wells Elana Wells 5'6" | PG Burlington Central | 2021 State IL , 5’7” Guard, Burlington Central
I have another article coming out in the coming weeks that will highlight ‘Scoring Point Guards’, and initially thought about including Wells in that because of her ability to score at such a high rate. I opted to choose her here because she is truly more than a scorer. Elana is a very talented ball-handler and gifted passer, which makes her such a dynamic player on offense.
