When that player happens to be a young point guard, the team’s future is bound to be an exciting one that has room for growth. Below is a list of standout guards who will be heading into their junior seasons this winter.
Ny’Era West Ny’Era West 5'9" | CG Rangeview | 2022 State CO – Rangeview
Possibly one of the state’s more versatile players, West made a strong statement this past season. She helped the Raiders reach the third round of the playoffs while leading the team in scoring and steals. The 5-foot-9 guard finished the season with an average of 16.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.3 steals, and 2.6 assists per game. Not only was West named to PGH Colorado’s All-Sophomore list, but she is also the 10th ranked player in her class. Also, her performance earned her a first team all-conference spot for the East Metro Athletic Conference.
Breanna Jefferson Breanna Jefferson 5'4" | CG Vista PEAK | 2022 State CO – Vista PEAK
Jefferson is a fantastic player to watch. She has some of the best footwork on the court, making her an absolute threat on both sides of the ball. The 5-foot-3 guard is a rising star who played a significant role in the Bison’s 22-3 overall season record, which ended in the third round of the state playoffs. Jefferson finished the season averaging 9.6 points, two steals, 1.9 assists, and 1.8 rebounds per game. This young athlete has a very bright future.
Jasmyn Williams Jasmyn Williams 5'5" | CG Arvada West | 2022 State CO – Arvada West
Williams is a player who developed tremendously throughout the season. Not only does she help to set the tone for the Wildcats, but she also makes the wing a problematic area to play for opponents. The 5-foot-5 guard is capable of applying intense pressure thanks to a mix of speed and a robust set of defensive skills. Williams averaged 4.7 points, 2.3 assists, 2.3 steals, and two rebounds per game. Not only did her performance help the Wildcats win their first playoff game in almost a decade, but it also landed her a spot on Jeffco’s second team all-conference list.
Mia Trevino Mia Trevino 5'2" | PG Denver West | 2022 State CO – Denver West
Trevino not only leads the Cowboys in total steals with 133, but she also ranks fifth in the state in takeaways. The 5-foot-1 guard finished second in scoring behind another talented player in her class, Jasmine Arreola Jasmine Arreola 5'9" | SF Denver West | 2022 State CO . With an average of 14.1 points, 5.8 steals, 3.6 assists, and two rebounds per game, Trevino is a standout player offensively and defensively.
Amana Malki – Lotus School for Excellence
Malki is a 5-foot-6 guard who led the Meteors in scoring, rebounds and steals. Her 18.5 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 4.5 steals per game average helped the Meteors finish with an 18-5 overall record. Malki’s sophomore performance resulted in her being named Confluence League’s Player of the Year, making her an absolute radar-worthy athlete.
