Taller prospects have begun to develop into better all-around players and spend more time working on their passing and ball handling abilities. This has led to the emergence of the point forward position.
I had the chance to see several prospects who fit this mold last season. With that in mind, I wanted to highlight a few of the best point forwards in Texas.
Evie Goetz Evie Goetz 5'11" | SF Denton Guyer | 2021 State TX – 2021 6’1’’ Guard/Forward (HG Elite Watts) Denton Guyer HS – When I think of a point forward, I think of a player like Goetz. She possesses great size, solid handles, and brilliant decision making in a pinch. Her height coupled with her vision allows her to see over the defense and deliver accurate passes. The TCU commit can impact games in a variety of ways with her scoring, passing, rebounding, and defense.
Zeryhia Lee-Aokuso – 2023 5’9’’ Combo Guard (Pro Skills EYBL) Amarillo HS – The underclassman is a willing passer who can distribute on the perimeter or in the post. Her strength is excellent for someone her age, and she should only get stronger as she continues to grow. She almost exclusively takes high-percentage shots and knows how to put her team in advantageous situations. Furthermore, she is a versatile defender.
Chloe Hassman – 2021 5’9’’ Shooting Guard/Small Forward Coppell HS – Hassman plays bigger than her height would suggest. She handles the ball well and has no trouble bringing the ball up and initiating the offense. The soon-to-be senior is a physical player who cuts hard, contributes on the glass at both ends, and has the wisdom to exploit mismatches when she sees them. She is a bit raw, but her upside is tremendous.
Alexis Cortez Alexis Cortez 5'10" | SF Allen | 2023 State TX – 2023 5’11’’ Shooting Guard/Small Forward (Lady Drive Nation Duncan 2023) Allen HS – Cortez plays with an edge at both ends. She balances her intensity with her unselfish nature on offense. She is also extremely comfortable when handling the ball. When she does attack the basket, she shows good strength and athleticism. Defensively, her length allows her to get a hand on a ton of balls and she has a knack for getting into passing lanes.
Jiya Perry Jiya Perry 5'11" | SF DeSoto | 2022 State TX – 2022 5’11’’ Small Forward (Team Lex Gold) DeSoto HS – Desoto is loaded with versatile prospects, but Perry’s ability to contribute in numerous ways always stood out to me. She crashes the boards at both ends and does serious damage with her jumper from mid-range and behind the arc. She moves fluidly with or without the ball and has a smoothness to her game that most young players don’t. Additionally, she makes some really nice-looking entry passes into the post. I love the way she keeps her bigs involved.
