Although these players are in discussion with colleges of various levels, their recruitment is still open. These players were recently evaluated in the Player Evaluation Sessions that are taking place in May – 2020.
Jaden Leslie (Dobson, 5’8″, 2021, CG/W)
Leslie displayed a lot of versatility during her junior year.
Leslie was one of the top 2021 players in the state as a freshman starter for the 6A Dobson Mustangs. She entered high school with an advanced understanding of the game, and possessed good size and strength to compete with the older guards in the conference. After a promising freshman campaign, Leslie had to sit out her sophomore year due to injury. She recovered nicely in her junior season as she led Dobson in scoring (12.4), assists (2.5), steals (2.8) and second in rebounding (4). A remarkable season for Leslie and for the Mustangs as the finished with a 21-8 record earning Leslie a spot on the 2nd Team All 6A Conference team.
As indicated by her stats and shown in the video, Leslie can impact the game in a variety of ways. She has good size at 5’8” and she has shown that she can rotate between the 1, 2, 3 with ease which makes Leslie and intriguing prospect for the next level. She plays a physical brand of basketball on both ends of the court and what I like is that she plays with a sense of urgency. Leslie has good range with her jumper and her ball skills allow her to run the point if needed although I see Leslie as a 2 or combo at the next level. Leslie was looking forward to the Spring and Summer Viewing periods because she is completely healthy, and she was playing her best basketball. She will be ready once play resumes.
Graciela Roybal (Hamilton, 5’3″, 2021, PG/CG)
Roybal is a coach on the floor. Exciting player to watch.First lets start of with academics. Roybal has a 4.73 GPA (Weighed) which makes her a prime target for High Academic D2s or D3s. If she was just a 2-3 inches taller, we would talking about a D1 prospect for sure. Some college is going to get a really good player who knows how to run the team get everyone involved. Roybal quietly goes to work and will put an imprint on the game before its over. She earned 2nd Team All Conference in 6A leading an incredibly deep Hamilton team in scoring. Her turnover ratio is extremely low considering how much the ball is in her hands.
Roybal shoots the ball well from deep and in the mid-range area, and her ability to attack the lane is starting to make her a very effective player. The video illustrates Royabal’s decision making and court awareness. Look for her to have a breakout AAU season once it starts.
Yvette Ruiz (Moon Valley, 5’5″, 2021, PG)
Ruiz is one of the most underrated PGs in the class.Ruiz is another High Academic player with a 3.7 GPA. She is a player that some may not be familiar with but she can ball. Ruiz is a defensive standout and she is excellent playing the passing lane. She recovers quickly and Ruiz is one of the better on the ball defender. On the offensive end, she is a game manager, a pass first lead guard and she will take care of the ball.
Ruiz mid range game stands out at this time and she will need to continue to stretch her jumper out to the 3 point line as she prepares for the next level. I believe Ruiz would be a perfect match for a solid academic D2 or D3 school. Ruiz is an even better person as I have had the opportunity to follow her during the past 3 years. She is a first team 4A All Region performer as well.
Arguellez from Flowing Wells in no longer under the radarMelinda Arguellez (Flowing Wells, 5’7″, 2G/W)
As any scout that puts in the work, we are constantly looking for players that are under the radar or simply needs more exposure. Arguellez is a player that I have heard of but had never seen play before. She averaged 18 points and 9 rebounds from the guard position for Flowing Wells leading her to a 1st Team All 5A Conference selection. Arguellez was invited to the player evaluation event in Tucson and she did not disappoint. Oh…Arguellez has a 4.0 GPA as well.
Arguellez is a dynamic, driven performer who is always grinding and fighting for every inch. She is a quality all-around player who has the quickness and agility to be a very effective on the ball defender. Of the offensive end, Arguellez attacks the basket with ease and she can finish. Her jumper looks efficient and her ball handling looked solid in a camp setting. I am excited to see her perform once basketball resume which will allow me to gain a complete understanding of Arguellez’s ability. She passes the eye test in terms of physical ability, quickness and she is a good athlete. Stay tuned…
