Continue ReadingWith the release of the latest PGH Colorado watch list update for the Class of 2023 prior to the start of the 2019-20 postseason in Colorado, a total of 20 new players joined the rankings. Some have emerged through excellent freshman campaigns while others are popping up at smaller schools that receive less exposure. Many of them probably should have already been in the rankings to begin with.
Be sure to check out Part 1 and Part 2. Here are four more 2023’s who recently entered the PGH Colorado watch list, and where they’re at having just completed their first high school seasons.
Aiyana Mitchell Aiyana Mitchell 6'4" | C Fountain-Fort Carson | 2023 State CO , 6-3, PF, Fountain-Fort Carson
A 6-foot-3 post, Mitchell is a very high-upside player who has already shown the ability to impact any game with her presence in the post. She can block shots and rebounds well, also utilizing her length and improving footwork to get into position and alter passes and shots at the defensive end of the floor. Fountain-Fort Carson had a number of upperclassman weapons this past winter so Mitchell wasn’t counted on for much scoring, but that will likely begin to change soon.
Jensen Renquist Jensen Renquist 5'8" | SF Walsh | 2023 State CO , 5-8, SF, Walsh
This Walsh freshman made headlines earlier this season when she broke the Colorado girls basketball state record for free-throws in a single game, making 24 of 26 attempts at the charity stripe during a double-overtime loss to Wiley on Jan. 24. Renquist was also ninth overall in Class 1A with a scoring average of 17.3 points. She also posted 10.6 rebounds to average a double-double, and was good for 2.2 assists, 2.2 steals and 3.6 blocks a night.
Alyssa Rodriguez, 5-3, PG, Palmer
There were only a handful of freshmen across Colorado who led their teams in scoring and this is one of them. Well on her way to 1,000 points in her career after scoring 297 this winter, Rodriguez attacks the basket fearlessly at 5-foot-3 and shot 39 percent (64 for 164) from 3-point range in 2019-20. The Terrors certainly have an intriguing young player on their hands and it should be fun to watch how she improves over the next several years.
Alena San Augustin Alena San Augustin 5'5" | PG Cheyenne Mountain | 2023 State CO , 5-4, SG, Cheyenne Mountain
Though she’s on the smaller side, San Augustin is a quick player who loves to attack off the dribble and shoot from the perimeter. She was third on the team behind a pair of seniors, averaging 11.2 points per game, and also had 3.2 steals a night. The freshman guard also made 36 of the 108 long-range shots she attempted this winter and looks early on like she could develop quickly into a talented scorer.
