Continue ReadingI have a saying”it’s not what you do, it’s who you do it against” and some get it, many don’t, but I use that to go along with I’ve seen players average 30, 40 even 50 ppg in HS that panned out in college, this was during the era when it really was AAU, you know when you had to pay for a card and wait 90 days to leave a club team after you’ve found out you were lied to. Well, all of that has changed yet the manipulation of stats hasn’t and I have listed several players that didn’t average double digits yet started for Top 25 programs but what do I know other than everything relevant about evaluating talent so I’m dropping some lights out shooters from the area I caught during the regular season and even a few in the playoffs. I’ll omit Tori Garza Tori Garza 5'8" | SG New Caney | 2021 State TX (New Caney) who just committed to Oklahoma State but I locked her at D1 the first time I saw her in the 8th grade so I’m not surprised
2021
Kyndall Hunter Kyndall Hunter 5'8" | SG Cypress Creek | 2021 State #23 Nation TX (Cypress Creek) Hunter just sizes defenders up and goes straight at them and her NBA range jumper is one of the best in the state yet she can mix it up and consistently knock down the midrange. She’s strong and powerful and understands how to not only get her shot off against anyone but take the lick and punishment in stride. None of this surprises me, I called her a #D1Lock before her first middle school game
Gracelynn Alvarez Gracelynn Alvarez 5'9" | SG Heights | 2021 State TX (Heights) when you guard Alvarez when she steps across halfcourt because she can let it fly and drop it consistently but the way she does it can change the momentum of a game just like that. She lives for the pressure shot, she delivers over and over yet over the years, her ability to create her shot while being defended has taken off and that combined with going either way for the jumper makes her a legitimate threat
Gia Adams Gia Adams 5'8" | SG Jersey Village | 2021 State TX (Jersey Village) Adams had me scratching my head in her freshman season so I had to use my search bar to see I had already written about her. Her quickness combined with a deceptive first step is superseded by her change of pace in traffic that lets her “stop and pop” in rhythm and from mid to long-range, she just makes things happen. Long and athletic, the base, she elevates over defenders and gets her shot off whenever she wants
Na’Layjah Johnson Na’Layjah Johnson 5'6" | SG College Station | 2021 State TX (College Station) Johnson falls into multiple categories as far as shooting because of her extended range and her propensity to want that pressure shot and the multiple games I’ve seen her win or send into overtime this season at the buzzer has just left me somewhat speechless. She can shoot it off the dribble as well as catch and shoot and her work ethic shows because she keeps taking her game to a different level
Arleighsha Fontenot Arleighsha Fontenot 5'7" | SG Ridgepoint | 2021 State TX (Ridgepoint) Fontenot has gone from a back to the basket player in elementary school to a legitimate shooter and her performance during the playoffs was astounding as she found ways to put the ball in the basket helping lead her team to its first-ever regional semifinals. Her range is unlimited, she has one of the areas best “catch and shoot” with accuracy and she understands how to set defenders up
2022
Kylie Minter Kylie Minter 5'5" | SG Clear Springs | 2022 State TX (Clear Springs) Minter was in MINT condition all season and turned it up in the playoffs as she too is a pressure player that relishes the heat. she creates off the dribble, if she’s double or triple-teamed, it doesn’t matter, she brings “it” and her pull-up jumper from mid to long-range is something to see. As good as she is, I love her upside because she goes so hard at defenders that you just know more is coming
2023
Jacei Denley Jacei Denley 5'6" | SG Beaumont Westbrook | 2023 State TX (Beaumont Westbrook) Denley ran the point but she is a shooter, certified and once she gets going, usually at the start of the game, she’s hard to contain, especially from long range. She attacks and shows the step back or the stutter step to keep defenders guessing but she can come off of a pick and drop the outside shot or just patiently waits for whatever the defense gives
