We are not far removed from the 2020 Women’s National Basketball Association draft. With that in mind, I wanted to compare some of the prospects I saw this past season to the newest members of the WNBA. Keep in mind that these are not projections and be on the lookout for more WNBA comparison articles in the near future!
Amarachi Kimpson Amarachi Kimpson 5'7" | PG Little Elm | 2023 State TX – 2023 5’7 Point Guard (CyFair) Little Elm HS
WNBA Comp – Sabrina Ionescu
Ionescu was consistently one of the most electric players in college basketball (male or female) throughout her career at Oregon. The No. 1 overall pick does everything at a high level. She is an extraordinary talent. I think Amarachi Kimpson Amarachi Kimpson 5'7" | PG Little Elm | 2023 State TX is extraordinary as well. Like Ionescu, Kimpson has deep range from behind the arc and shoots the three ball at a high clip. The 2023 floor general can get done on the drive too. Although she is not the prolific passer that Ionescu developed into at Oregon, she is a solid facilitator with good vision. She has plenty of time to add that to her already diverse offensive game.
Evie Goetz Evie Goetz 5'11" | SF Denton Guyer | 2021 State TX – 2021 6’1 Combo Guard (HG Elite Watts) Denton Guyer HS
WNBA Comp – Satou Sabally
The first player selected by the Dallas Wings is incredibly dynamic. Sabally is a tall and long athlete with guard-like skills. She can handle the ball, shoot the three from the catch or off the bounce, and exploit mismatches in the paint. Her size and skill set remind me of Evie Goetz Evie Goetz 5'11" | SF Denton Guyer | 2021 State TX . Goetz is exceptionally versatile. She has the ability to impact games in a variety of ways. Her jumper is pure, and her offensive decision making is excellent. She is pretty good on the defensive end as well. Both Sabally and Goetz can fill up the box score with their scoring and rebounding while also contributing in other ways due to their multidimensional styles of play.
Jada Malone Jada Malone 6'3" | PF The Village School | 2021 State #30 Nation TX – 2021 6’4 Power Forward (CyFair Premier) The Village HS
WNBA Comp – Lauren Cox
Cox was the first big selected in the draft. The No. 3 overall pick can outmuscle opponents down low but also possesses the ability to stretch the floor with her shooting. I think she has a lot in common with Jada Malone Jada Malone 6'3" | PF The Village School | 2021 State #30 Nation TX . Similar to Cox, Malone is a dominant force in the post. The No. 1 ranked player in our 2021 rankings can finish though double teams in the paint but isn’t afraid to put the ball on the ground when the opportunity presents itself. Furthermore, she can dominate on the glass and at the defensive end. Additionally, Cox and Malone are deceptively good passers, making them complete players.
Kyndall Hunter Kyndall Hunter 5'8" | SG Cypress Creek | 2021 State #23 Nation TX – 2021 5’8 Shooting Guard (CyFair EYBL) Cypress Creek HS
WNBA Comp – Chennedy Carter
I had the pleasure of seeing a ton of Chennedy Carter while I attended Texas A&M. She is a highlight reel waiting to happen whenever she steps on the court. She can take over games all by herself. Her ability to create shots on offense is why I’ve chosen her for Kyndall Hunter Kyndall Hunter 5'8" | SG Cypress Creek | 2021 State #23 Nation TX ‘s comp. Hunter is an elite scorer. Like Carter, she is always in attack mode and loves to show off her craftiness. The 2021 shooting guard can drain triples from deep but is also capable of getting to the basket and finishing through contact. These are two players who are as entertaining to watch as they are talented.
