They can be relied on to facility their perspective offenses while also taking advantage of scoring opportunities. Having an understanding and skillset to create plays for teammates or create their own shot efficiently is what allows their coaches to move them around on the court. These players vary in size, but all can be trusted to defend bigger guards at the shooting guard position as well.
Here are a few combo guards from the class of 2022 already making their mark.
Naja Reeves | 5’8″ | Holy Innocents’
Reeves has a good feel for the game and plays with good energy. She is a solid ball-handler that keeps her eyes on the floor to find teammates in good positions to make easy plays. She is fast in transition and a strong finisher on the break. She does a good job of taking on the pressure while her plays develop and creates good passing angles with her dribble. Reeves can also score the ball at all three levels. She can knock down the open shot from beyond the arc and has a consistent dribble pull up that she likes to take. She shows an understanding of how to use the ball screen and reads her scoring opportunities out of it well. She is a good defender and can guard multiple perimeter positions with a combination of quickness and physical toughness.
Paris Miller Paris Miller 5'10" | PG Johns Creek | 2022 State #30 Nation GA | 5’10″ | Luella
Miller’s size creates challenges for other guards looking to defend her. She has good control of the dribble and can put together combinations to get by defenders for her own scoring chances. She is an aggressive driver that can muscle finishes at the rim and relies on that ability to be the most effective scoring. When handling the playmaking responsibilities her height allows her to see over defenders. She has a good court vision and can deliver passes to teammates with either hand off the bounce. She has a decent range on her jumper and can knock down jumpers from behind the arc. She will need to continue to develop on the defensive end. She is pretty good when on the ball but has a tendency to lose her man when in help defense. I expect her to grow defensively under Coach LaToya Brown at Luella.
Kaleigh Addie Kaleigh Addie 5'7" | PG Greater Atlanta Christian School | 2022 State #66 Nation GA | 5’6″ | GAC
Addie brings a high skill level to the floor from the guard position. She is a very crafty ball-handler and an acrobatic finisher at the rim. She reads the floor well with the ball in her hands and makes good decisions on whether to create for herself or make plays for her teammates. She has a great range on her jump shot and is dangerous when given space behind the arc. She uses good counters to match good defenders and creates space with great changes in pace and stepback jumpers. She does not only lead by example as she is very vocal on both ends of the floor. She defends with a lot of energy and takes pride in getting stops on the defensive end. Even though Addie is a smaller guard her ability to put the ball in the basket and place good passes for her teammates while taking on heavy pressure makes her a high level college prospect.
Kara Dunn Kara Dunn 6'0" | SF Mt. Paran Christian | 2022 State #70 Nation GA | 6’0″ | Mt. Paran
Dunn is the most versatile player on this list. She can do a little of everything on both ends of the floor. She has the ability to create her own scoring opportunities whether shooting her consistent jumper or using moves to attack the basket and finish in the paint. She is a three-level scorer with good ball-handling and vision of the floor. She can easily find teammates in transition when pushing with tempo or in the half-court. Her ability to score, handle the ball and her size allows her to play virtually any position. Defensively she can be used to defend on the perimeter or defend strong posts on other teams. She has a lot of versatility and is a high major prospect.
Ta’Mia Stargell Ta’Mia Stargell 5'7" | CG Langston Hughes | 2022 State GA | 5’7″ | Langston Hughes
Stargell plays the game with a good motor. She has continuous energy when on the floor. She is a quick guard that really can get downhill in a hurry in transition. She is a good finisher but will continue to get stronger at the rim. She can play either guard position without losing her ability to produce offensively. She is a pesky defender that uses quick feet and active hands to cause problems for guards she defends. As her three-point percentage increases and her skill catches up with her natural athleticism, she will become even more of a scoring threat.
Ta’Niya Latson Ta’Niya Latson 5'8" | CG American Heritage | 2022 State #47 Nation FL | 5’8″ | Westlake
Latson is the most athletic player on this list. She is a great combination of size and speed. Her strong frame makes her great for pushing the ball and finishing in transition. She is hard to stop once she decides to get to the rim. Her quickness and toughness allow her to make plays that many guards cannot. She is a tenacious defender. Whether on the ball or help defense she has a knack for finding the ball for steals or deflections. She is also usually the fastest to long rebounds and has the leaping ability to battle for rebounds against post players. Latson’s jumper is not as consistent as desired right now, but she is very hard to keep out of driving lanes which require defenses to help. Driving is when she is best at identifying open teammates for open jump shots or drop passes to her posts for easy layup scores. She is another high major prospect in this class at the position.
