I’ve had the luxury of seeing a ton of dynamic playmakers this season with a knack for getting their teammates involved on the offensive end, and I wanted to shed some light on these unsung heroes.
With that in mind, here are five of the best passers in Texas:
Jazzy Owens Jazzy Owens 5'8" | PG Liberty | 2022 State TX -Barnett – 2022 5’8” Point Guard (Pro Skills 16U EYBL) Frisco Liberty HS – Owens-Barnett thrives in drive and kick scenarios. She is so good at pressuring defenses and forcing them to commit. Her ability to manipulate opponents with her eyes and subsequently exploit missed assignments is very impressive. She is also great when it comes to leading the break. She makes smart decisions in the open court while playing fast. It makes her a challenging player to defend.
Katelyn Jones – 2023 5’6” Point Guard (Texas Lonestar 16 Black) Denton Guyer HS – Jones plays alongside a pair of talented ball handlers. Guyer didn’t ask her to light it up with her scoring as a freshman, but she still left her mark on the court. Oftentimes that was due to her distributing. Jones is a generous passer who keeps the ball hopping. She always makes the extra pass when necessary. She is the type of point guard that everyone should want to play with.
Carolynn Washington – 2021 5’4” Point Guard Cedar Hill HS – Washington might be the fastest player on or off the ball in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. I’m not exaggerating either, she has some serious wheels. Her speed benefits her in a number of areas, including as a facilitator. She is a step ahead of opposing players, both mentally and literally. Defenders are forced to give her a cushion, which opens up passing lanes. She takes what the defense gives her and delivers accurate balls in a variety of different situations.
Schuyler Noordhoff – 2022 5’10” Small Forward Trinity Christian Academy (Addison) – Noordhoff is listed as a wing, but she operates like a guard. She brings the ball up, initiates the offense, and creates for her teammates. She attacks when the opportunity presents itself, however, she wants to be a facilitator. The 2022 forward is aware of her teammates’ strengths and weaknesses and uses her passing to get them high percentage looks from the field. She is a long and athletic playmaker. While she is still a bit raw, her upside is tremendous.
Chandler Browning – 2021 5’4” Point Guard Prosper HS – Browning is a hard-nosed floor general. She is an unselfish distributor with a knack for getting the ball inside to her post players for good looks from the interior. I love how she doesn’t let her size hold her back. She isn’t afraid to go into the teeth of the defense and take some hits in order to drop it off to one of her bigs down low. Additionally, her court vision is solid in transition as well as in half-court sets.
