Continue ReadingI saw many great ball handlers at the Battle at the Falls, but a few point guards and guards stood out to me for their ability to set up their teammates right where they needed the ball. These top five passers of the weekend are unselfish, and they have a skillset that goes beyond setting up the offense.
Taylor Veach Taylor Veach 5'11" | SF Central DeWitt | 2022 State IA — 2022 — Central DeWitt High School — Lady Martin Brothers 2022
Veach is one of the most well-rounded players I saw in the 2022-2024 bracket. She made impressive passes up the court and into the post all game. With the ball in her hands, she changes speed and direction well to get to the hoop. She can guard on the ball, and her strong build makes her versatile on both ends of the floor.
Kaylie Cox Kaylie Cox 5'7" | CG St. Michael-Albertville | 2024 State MN — 2024 — St. Michael-Albertville High School — Minnesota Fury 2024 UAA
Cox, a physically strong player for a to-be sophomore, should be on the radar for college scouts. She sets up teammates and makes the right passes at point guard, and she doubles as a skilled driver on the wing. This weekend, Cox showed that she can match up defensively against quick point guards.
Yazmeen Whitsitt — 2024 — Decorah High School — Lady Martin Brothers 2024
Whitsitt is a small but promising point guard prospect. She sets up teammates with the drive and kick and moves the ball well. She also showed great handles when breaking the press against a very long Minnesota Fury 2024 UAA group.
Marisa Frost — 2024 — Centennial High School — Minnesota Fury 2024 UAA
Not only can frost shoot and drive, she keeps her eyes up to find teammates near the basket. There were many instances at Battle at the Falls when she made nice bounce passes through defenders to a teammate near the hoop. She also finds her teammates in transition. Overall, a nice guard that should be on the radar for colleges.
Kate Cordes Kate Cordes 5'7" | CG Shakopee | 2022 State MN — 2022 — Shakopee High School — Minnesota Stars Bjorgaard 10th
Cordes has played a solid role for Shakopee as an underclassman, and it impressed me that she has confidence with her post entry passing at a young age. As a mid-sized guard, she made nice assists over the long arms of a taller defender this weekend.
