Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible.
We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges.
We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2022’s who could be primed for big seasons.
Emma Vohs Emma Vohs 5'7" | PG Ridge View | 2022 State IA – Ridge View
Plenty of optimism surrounds Ridge View as they head into 2020-21 thanks to a strong conclusion to the season.
The Raptors finished with 11 wins overall, reaching the regional quarterfinals.
Sophomore Emma Vohs Emma Vohs 5'7" | PG Ridge View | 2022 State IA finished as the team leader in both rebounding and assists, averaging almost 10 boards and over three dimes a game. She will be counted on for more of that moving forward.
Vohs, who shot 43 percent from the field, also averaged just under nine points a night.
Alivea Harms Alivea Harms 5'8" | SF Central Springs | 2022 State IA – Central Springs
When you are playing several underclassmen, a learning curve can be expected. Central Springs went through that with the expectation that it pays off moving forward.
Sophomore Alivea Harms Alivea Harms 5'8" | SF Central Springs | 2022 State IA was a critical component to that, posting 153 total points with 53 steals and 51 rebounds. She ranked second on the team in scoring and steals.
Harms, one of four players who started at least 17 games, could see a boost in her scoring with an improvement in her shooting from the field.
Leah Moen – Lake Mills
Lake Mills will need a leading scorer next year and Leah Moen just might be that person.
Moen finished her sophomore season averaging just under five points a night, making 16 three-pointers. She was also almost automatic at the free throw line, making 81 percent of her attempts.
Along with scoring 109 total points, Moen also had 29 assists, 13 steals and blocked six shots.
Kaylea Fessler – Central Springs
Class of 2022’s Kaylea Fessler provided a little bit of everything this past winter for Central Springs.
Fessler finished with 59 total points, but ranked among the team leaders for the Panthers with 101 rebounds, 74 steals, 37 assists and 20 blocks.
She started all 22 games, gaining valuable court experience with a strong outlook to the future.
Sam Nielsen – North Union
North Union rotated in a handful of underclassmen this past season, finding success with many of them including sophomore Sam Nielsen.
Nielsen, who saw action in 22 games, finished with 93 points and 59 rebounds. She shot almost 45 percent from the field, and will be looked upon to continue that next year after the graduation of four senior starters.
