Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible.
We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges.
We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2023’s who need to be on your radar.
Makayla Morrison Makayla Morrison 5'1" | PG Central Lee | 2023 State IA – Central Lee
Playing alongside an all-stater like Mya Merschman Mya Merschman 6'1" | SF Central Lee | 2021 State IA only helped elevate the game of Class of 2023’s Makayla Morrison Makayla Morrison 5'1" | PG Central Lee | 2023 State IA at Central Lee.
Morrison finished her first varsity season by starting all 24 games for the Hawks with 208 points, 92 rebounds, a team-high 63 steals and 28 assists.
She shot just under 30 percent from the field, but made 35 three-pointers and converted on 67 percent of her free throw attempts.
Rachel George Rachel George 5'11" | C Centerville | 2023 State IA – Centerville
It did not hinder Rachel George Rachel George 5'11" | C Centerville | 2023 State IA ’s production coming off the bench for Centerville as a freshman.
George scored 168 points, adding in 152 rebounds with 37 steals, 31 blocks and 24 assists. She shot over 35 percent from the field and made 24 three-pointers.
George was one of three Centerville players with over 150 rebounds and also converted 57 percent f her free throw attempts.
Sophie Waber – Albia
The leading scorer for Albia was Class of 2023’s Sophia Waber, as the newcomer recorded 136 total points.
Waber also had 95 rebounds, a team-high 51 assists and led the Blue Demons with 37 steals. She shot over 31 percent from the field and made 11 three-pointers in all.
Sophia Young – Davis County
As Davis County looks to grow off a 10-10 campaign in 2019-20, look for Sophia Young to grow along with them.
Young led the team with 44 assists last year, adding 93 points, 57 rebounds and 44 assists for the Mustangs. With a season of experience under her belt, she should improve her percentages from the field and three-point line.
Sophia Swarthout – Chariton
Chariton found a nice piece for the present and future in Class of 2023’s Sophia Swarthout.
Last year, Swarthout played in 19 games, making 12 starts and finishing with 81 points, 34 rebounds and 26 steals. She knocked down 14 three-pointers and was never hesitant to let it rip, hoisting up 63 triples on the year.
