Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible.
We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges.
We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2023’s who need to be on your radar.
Katy Reyerson Katy Reyerson 6'2" | PF West Marshall | 2023 State IA – West Marshall
The top scoring freshman in the region, Katy Reyerson Katy Reyerson 6'2" | PF West Marshall | 2023 State IA helped West Marshall win 18 games and advance to the regional semifinals.
Reyerson led the team in rebounds with 179, averaging nine per game. That included four offensive boards a night which helped her score 174 points on 56 percent shooting from the field.
Along with producing over 170 points and rebounds, Reyerson also had 55 steals, 46 assists and 11 blocks in starting 19 games.
Taylor Cole – Clarinda
Clarinda’s Class of 2023’s Taylor Cole jumped right into the fire as a newcomer this past winter, starting 20 games and playing in all 22.
Cole scored 135 points, which ranked second on the team, adding 79 rebounds, 40 steals and 36 assists. She shot just under 34 percent from the field and 44 percent at the free throw line, making a handful of three-pointers.
With a year of varsity experience under her belt, expect improved numbers from Cole this coming season.
Josey Dunbar – Clarke
Josey Dunbar surpassed 100 points as a freshman, helping Clarke set the building blocks towards the future.
Dunbar played in all 21 games, scoring 105 points with 110 rebounds, 20 steals and 11 assists. She went to the free throw line 49 times, which ranked among the team leaders for the Indians.
With the entire roster set to return, Clarke will look to put together a winning season in 2020-21.
Jada Jensen – Atlantic
A winning season was within reach for Atlantic after 16 games, as the Trojans sat at 8-8. While they struggled down the stretch, the experience gained should pay off this coming year.
Class of 2023’s Jada Jensen saw action in 16 games for the Trojans, producing 25 points with 13 rebounds, eight assists and eight steals. Just two seniors graduate, but there should be minutes for Jensen on the hardwood.
Doryn Paup – Creston
Creston put together a run in the postseason this past winter to reach a regional championship, coming up short of state against Red Oak.
Now, the Panthers will look to keep the momentum going.
One key newcomer could be Doryn Paup, who saw time in a handful of games last year. While Creston returns the bulk of its production, Paup flashed her abilities by contributing 22 points and 20 rebounds with seven steals in limited minutes.
