Jackson continuous improvement is one of the reasons I have Cy Creek in the driver’s seat to win Region 3 again but that’s another story and here are some of the players that caught my eye on Sunday
2021
Kayla Bowen-Katy Sting
Bowen brings a surplus of energy on both ends of the court and she does some other things as well, like create her shot under pressure, attacks the basket strongly and sees the floor well but her pull-up jumper is smooths and she plays the passing lane
Gabrielle Hueter-Lady Thunder 17U (Magnolia)
Hueter does so many things well as she stands at the magic number of six feet such handle the ball well in the open court as well as from the wing. She can score facing the basket, mid to long-range, she has good hands as well as good footwork and she rebounds and defends
2022
Imani Ivery- DC Queens Barnett (Foster)
Ivery was on fire would be an understatement as she showed one of the best pull-up jumpers in Houston. XShe elevates over defenders and she has nice moves to keep the defense guessing because, with her variety of offense tools, like the step back, you have to be careful how you guard her
Alyssa Prier-Houston Hoops United Red (Alief Taylor)
Prier has a nice first step, a very nice one in fact and her athleticism and energy just doesn’t slack up as she attacks strongly and finishes acrobatically but her pull-up while being defended is definitely a good “go to” shot, especially under pressure
Aynaiya Jones- DC Queens Davis 2022 (Dobie HS)
Jones was one of many athletic guards that played at the event and her ballhandling, under control, while going full speed, was also one of the best. She understands how to set the defense up and she picks and chooses where she wants to take her shot
2023
Riley McCloskey Riley McCloskey 5'3" | PG Memorial | 2023 State TX -Just Play (Spring Branch Memorial)
McCloskey is that prototypical point guard that combines “size don’t matter’ when you can play and when she threw “no looks” with both hands, on the money, and in traffic, I threw my clipboard down yet her floater and mid to long-range was working as well
Macie Whitfield-Texas Energy (Deer Park)
Whitfield has good size, is court savvy and plays within herself so she mixed it up at the combo showing she could direct traffic but she also showed she could handle the ball under pressure and score from mid to long-range
Jewel Brandley-Showcase Elite 9th Grade (Pasadena Memorial)
Brandley is one of those players that can just silently do things that overwhelm you because once you look at the stat sheet after a game, she has it filled up. On the flip, she also can take over a game on the offensive end scoring consistently on the inside as well as stepping outside to hit the jumper
2024
Gwendlyn McGrew Gwendlyn McGrew 6'0" | CG Pasadena Memorial | 2024 State TX -Reps Up 2024
McGrew has already been called a #BCSLock by yours truly and this young lady continues to surprise as she’s throwing bullets with either hand, on the money, and when you can thread the needle-like that, all I can say is wow but her midrange is becoming virtually unstoppable as she opened up the game hitting 4 out of 5 ad I quit counting
LaNiah Thornton-Reps Up 2024
Thornton reminds me of so many players who weren’t 6’0 yet played as if they were and when you are a true #THROWBACK player, I get excited. She’s overpowering and her desire is second to none as she finishes with players hanging on her. She also scores off the dribble and has a solid pull-up
2025
Rihanna DeLeon-Rytes Warriors
DeLeon’s nickname is RiRi but it may as well have been three three because she was dropping an abundant amount of them from everywhere. She’s not just a spot-up three-point shooter, she’s a “catch and shoot” and at this age with that type of accuracy is huge. She also attacks the basket and plays the passing lane
2026
Camdyn Cole-League City Sharks
Cole is definitely on her way to being COLD on the court because when you’re this young with a solid skillset coupled with an abundance of upside, I break it down even further and watch her playing 4 years up at the way she reacts as well as how she does things instinctively but the offense is there and more will be coming
