There were a lot of good teams in attendance and there were so many stand out players. The college coaches in attendance were mesmerized at times by the talent on the court, especially considering the long lay off from the high school season to the first games of the grassroots season.
The OK Swish 17U team led by head coach Aso Pogi was undefeated on the day and featured several very athletic young players. Fatima Black (Norman North – 2021) was noticed by several of the college coaches in attendance for her ability to run the court very well and defend multiple positions. Stailee Heard (Sapulpa – 2023) is one of the top 2023 players in the state and showed off her tremendous athleticism on Saturday. Heard has the ability to absolutely take over a ballgame. Abby Schroeder (Southwest Covenant – 2022) is an outstanding defender – as is the entire OK Swish squad – and does a great job working to get open for her teammates. She more often than not drains her shots.
Texas U played well all weekend with a mixture of very good Texas players and one very big Oklahoman. Landry Allen (Tuttle – 2022) – as mentioned in our best of OKC – absolutely dominates the paint. Against very good competition she was still able to swat almost every shot in the middle. She also does a great job of gaining position on rebounds and reads the miss off of the rim very well.
Head coach Ruben Diaz always has his Shock teams ready to go, but this weekend it was the 2022 Gold squad that really stood out. Hannah Coons (Kiefer – 2024) is very young, but plays at a very high level. She has outstanding size and does a good job of being a force inside. She is still learning, but will clearly be one to watch over the next several years. Morgan Borgstadt (Verdigris – 2023) is always fun to watch. It is clear to see – whether in grassroots or high school games – that Borgstadt just “wants it.” She goes hard, always. She battles for every loose ball. She does not cut any opponent any slack. Borgstadt is an outstanding basketball player.
Stay tuned throughout the week for more updates and features on players from OKC Live at the Hive!
