We have entered an era of basketball in which just about every player is at least capable of making a three-point shot. That said, there will always be a select few whose shooting ability is on a different level, and I think these prospects fall into that category.
Here are five standout shooters from the class of 2022:
Jiya Perry Jiya Perry 5'11" | SF DeSoto | 2022 State TX – 2022 5’11’’ Shooting Guard/Small Forward (Team Lex Gold) DeSoto HS – Perry is an assassin from mid-range. She can hit pull-ups in transition as well as stop and pop in half-court sets. She is a solid shooter from three, especially from the catch. She is an efficient shooter who takes high percentage shots and typically doesn’t settle. Additionally, Perry’s off ball movement and understanding off spacing is evident in her play.
Jazzy Owens Jazzy Owens 5'8" | PG Liberty | 2022 State TX -Barnett – 2022 5’8’’ Point Guard (Pro Skills 16U EYBL) Frisco Liberty HS – Owens can get hers in a variety of ways. She does it all offensively, including shoot the ball well. She gets to the rim at will with her elusiveness. The 5A state champion is a master at manipulating leverage and has a great feel for when to throw on the breaks and let it fly from mid-range. She is tremendous off the dribble inside the arc but can also hit from three-point land in catch and shoot scenarios.
Sydney Ward Sydney Ward 6'0" | SF The Village School | 2022 State TX – 2022 5’11’’ Shooting Guard/Small Forward (Texas Elite Chuck) The Village HS – Ward is one of the most gifted catch-and-shoot prospects from any class that I’ve had the opportunity to see. She is deadly with the three ball from the corners. She knows when to sneak out to the corner to receive a kick out pass and is ready to fire at all times. The soon-to-be junior moves well off the ball and thrives at using screens to get herself good looks. Her style of play will immediately transfer to the next level.
Olivia Brennan – 2022 5’5’’ Shooting Guard Trinity Christian Academy (Addison) – I feel like a broken record saying this again, but Liv Brennan is wildly underrated. She is an elite shooter. She can absolutely take over a game when she gets it going from distance. Brennan is effective at shooting off the bounce and from the catch. The TCA guard exudes confidence on the court and has the ability to hit shots from deep range. She is automatic when left open and still dangerous with a defender closing out on her.
Alyssa Tarpley Alyssa Tarpley 5'11" | CG Gunter | 2022 State TX – 2022 5’10’’ Combo Guard (CyFair 16U EYBL) Allen HS – Tarpley has a beautiful jumper. She has the size to elevate over defenders and get her shot off. She doesn’t have to force things or hoist up a bunch of triples. Instead, she finds her shots within the flow of the game and makes them count by sinking them. Her shot selection is smart, but she can also make things happen in a pinch and create a good look for herself. I can’t wait to see what she does with more playing time as a junior.
