Two of the three won at least 10 games and reached the state playoffs while the other got close and will have a chance to get there this upcoming season. Who are some of the players that’ll have a say in their respective programs success? Here are the top returning forwards to lookout for in Edgecombe County during the 2020-21 season.
Jamia Guilford (Tarboro forward, 2022)
Rising junior forward Jamia Guilford has a good chance at a breakout season for the Tarboro Vikings. As a sophomore, she took advantage of the offensive glass and show some really good touch around the rim. The Vikings were able to win 15 games thanks to the play of one of the top returning players in the county. In a tough Coastal Plains 1-A conference, Guilford should have Tarboro in a position to challenge for the league title and another state playoff appearance.
Makayla Hudson (North Edgecombe forward, 2022)
Another rising junior that could significantly improve her teams chances of success is North Edgecombe’s Makayla Hudson. She was the Warriors second leading scorer during the 2019-20 season on a team that finished with an 8-13 record. With her among many key players returning, North Edgecombe should be able to compete for a state playoff bid of their own.
Alonee Smallwood (SouthWest Edgecombe forward, 2021)
Alonee Smallwood is one of the top returning post players in the county after an excellent junior season at SouthWest Edgecombe. She posted seven points, 10 rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block per game for the Cougars. Smallwood led the team in rebounding and will be tasked with leading that charge once again while also trying to increase her scoring load. She’s very capable of doing both and it could lead to the Cougars challenging in the Eastern Plains 2-A conference.
