Multiple teams were able to reach the 2019-20 state playoffs including one program that won their first state championship in over a decade. With teams revamping their respective rosters, this county is poised for another dominant season as a whole. Here is part one of the top returning guards to lookout for in Pitt County during the 2020-21 season.
Kylah Silver (D.H. Conley guard, 2023)
Kylah Silver is one of the top returning players in the area regardless of position and had an excellent freshman season at Conley. She stepped right into the starting lineup and averaged 15 points per game which was tied for the team lead. Her stellar play led the Vikings to an undefeated regular season, conference regular season and tournament title, and the fourth round of the 3-A state playoffs.
She will see an increase in play making and scoring responsibilities with the graduation of standout senior Jenna Wooten, but she’s already capable of orchestrating a potent offense. Expect the Vikings to be one of the favorites to win the conference with Silver returning.
Ania Sands (J.H. Rose guard, 2021)
After missing the playoffs in 2019, J.H. Rose was able to reach the 3-A state playoffs in 2020 thanks to the play of Ania Sands. The rising senior guard did it all for a Rampants squad that finished with 10 wins this past season. From scoring to passing and defending, she seemed to be the one making every play whether it was to set herself up or make a play for a teammate.
Sands showed a lot of mental and physical toughness while doing everything an excellent floor general is supposed to do. Rose will need her even more in 2021 with the graduation of leading scorer Kamya Brown and she’s capable of being their go to scorer and facilitator.
A’mari Palmer (South Central guard, 2023)
Amari Palmer is another 2023 prospect that made a big impact on a program during the 2019-20 season. She’s a very good facilitator, creates shots for herself and her teammates, and can get past any defender with ease. The rising sophomore is part of a talented group coming back for South Central, a school with a history of winning basketball games.
Palmer goes into her second year with a chance at a breakout performance for the Falcons after averaging seven points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals per contest last season. Expect her to see an even bigger role in South Central’s offense and it could have them near or at the top of their conference.
