Multiple teams were able to reach the 2019-20 state playoffs including one program that won their first state championship in over a decade. With teams revamping their respective rosters, this county is poised for another dominant season as a whole. Here is part two of the top returning guards to lookout for in Pitt County during the 2020-21 season.
Jahnyah Willoughby (Farmville Central guard, 2022)
Rising junior Jahnyah Willoughby had a lot of great games down the stretch of this past season for the co-state champion Farmville Central Jaguars. She was more of a slashing guard that liked attacking the basket and getting out in transition whether it was to score or pass. Willoughby’s role as a scorer should increase during the 2020-21 season with the graduation of two key starters. Expect her to be one of the many reasons why the Jaguars will have a shot to defend their state title.
Kayla Smith (South Central guard, 2022)
Another 2022 prospect that had a really good season was Kayla Smith at South Central. As a sophomore, she did it all for the Falcons averaging eight points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals, and one block per contest. As part of an excellent returning backcourt for the Falcons, Smith should have a breakout junior season that could help her team get back to the top of the Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A conference.
Zakarraih Smith-Crandle (J.H. Rose guard, 2022)
One of the top three point shooters in Pitt County last season was J.H. Rose guard Zakarraih Smith-Crandle. She posted just under 10 points per game and made a lot of big plays throughout the 2019-20 season for the Rampants. With their leading scorer graduating, Rose will need a lot of production from their rising junior guard if they want to return to the 3-A state playoffs.
