One team had a solid campaign thanks to one of the top 2022 prospects in North Carolina and the others are looking to improve their program. With a lot of teams replacing key senior graduates, who will step up their game going into this year? Here are the top returning players to lookout for in Craven County during the 2020-21 season.
Journee McDaniel Journee McDaniel 6'0" | CG Farmville Central | 2022 State NC (New Bern guard, 2022)
Ranked among the best players in the Prep Girls Hoops NC 2022 rankings, Journee McDaniel Journee McDaniel 6'0" | CG Farmville Central | 2022 State NC has certainly lived up to the billing. She’s led the New Bern Bears in scoring over first two seasons as a high school player and will soon see her recruitment rise if it hasn’t already. The rising junior guard helped New Bern win over twice as many games in 2020 as they won in 2019. With McDaniel back in the lineup, expect the Bears to be a playoff team in the 4-A division.
Destiny Banks-Wordington (New Bern forward, 2021)
Rising senior forward Banks-Wordington had a really good season for the Bears as well. She’s a post player that’s excellent in the paint and extends her range out to make jump shots. New Bern needs another big year from her if they want to contend in the Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A conference and make their return to the postseason.
Courtney Brown (West Craven guard, 2023)
Courtney Brown is one of West Craven’s top returning scorers after having a solid freshman season. With the graduation of leading scorer Kayla Simmons, the Eagles need someone to step up and it could be this rising sophomore guard. West Craven struggled to a two win campaign despite the really good production they got from Brown, so they’ll need a big leap from her if they want to improve.
