The 2024 class is deep in talent and the shooting guard position is also loaded. The shooting guard, also known as the two or off guard, is usually one of the better shooters on the team. They have to not only guard the position, they are often asked to guard small forwards or wings. At times, they are asked to be secondary ball handlers as well. Shooting guards are a little harder to evaluate at such a young age due the variance of shooting accuracy among the prospects. What we look for as the player enters high school is 1) Length or potential to be a tall guard (5’8+), 2) Shooting mechanics and shooting confidence, 3) Ability to score at all 3 levels and 4) Versatility to guard the wing position.
As these prospects move through moves through high school, they could be re-classified as small forwards, combo guards or remain as shooting guards depending on how much they grow and develop over the next four years.
Here is a list of some of the top shooting guards in the class of 2024.
Bomhower, Sierra (5’8”, Cibola) – Bomhower is improving by leaps and bounds and her body type indicates that there will be continued growth. Bomhower’s jumper is pure, her handle is effective and she has a high ceiling due to her length and deceptive athleticism. She is a definite sleeper in the class and getting better with every event. She could end of the highest ranked player from Yuma in quite some time.
Chee, Ahdiayh (5’5”, Dobson) – Chee is one of those players that can fit into any system and she will figure things it out and adjust her game. She does many things well from scoring to playing defense and making plays for others. Chee goes about her business quietly but she will do some damage one way or another before the game is over.
Graham, Melia (5’5′, Hamilton) – She is a glue type player who makes sure everyone is engaged and involved. Graham makes all the hustle plays and she does things that does not show up in the box scores. Whatever you need, Graham is intent on delivering. I could see Graham transition to the Combo Guard position for Hamilton due to the size that is coming in for the 2024 class..
Henderson, Tayliah (5’10”, Cienega) – Henderson has a chance to a big time nationally ranked layer before she leaves Cienega. Although she is still a little raw, she has great length and she is an exception athlete. Henderson takes chances and she is not afraid to fail. She just has to skill up a little and she will be unstoppable on both ends of the court.
Reibel, Madison (5’6”, Canyon Springs) – Reibel is a well rounded prospect who posses a very nice looking jumper out to the 3 point line. She is one of the better on the ball defenders and Reibel understands how to help and recover well. Her basketball knowledge is rather advanced and Reibel’s feel for the game will stand out as she looks to help help build a basketball tradition at Canyon Springs with 2024 Mia Burgess.
Thornton-Murray-Garrigan, Jaydin (5’5”, Shadow Ridge) – Known as TMG, this prospect has some really good upside. TMG has good size for the combo position, moves well, and solid all-around athleticism. She’s also a nice perimeter shooter who can make open rhythm jumpers consistently.
Ulrich, Maureen (5’8”, Xavier) – Hard-nose competitor and Ulrich is as physical as they come. Quiet is nature but she is always up for the challenge. Ulrich can handle, shoot and defend and she could have easily been classified as a combo guard. No doubt that she will put in the effort over the next four years to become a legitimate college prospect.
