The small forward position is often called the ‘3’ or the wing position. Small forwards are typically shorter, quicker, and leaner than power forwards and centers , but typically taller, longer and stronger than the guard positions. They will be asked to guard multiple positions from guards to power forwards as well as be able to shoot out to the 3 point line. Listed below are prospects that are projected to be small forwards going into their high school career.
Brown, Madison (5’9”, Desert Vista) – At this point in her development, Brown is long, lean, has some good bounce and a developing skill set. One of her best traits is the she is willing to go out of her comfort zone to improve. Brown is attacking the basketball more, she is trusting her jumper more and she will mix it up in the paint. By the completion of her sophomore season, she should be one of the class better prospects. Should be a 6′ wing at that time.
Burgess , Mia (5’8”, Canyon Springs) – Burgess is going to do big things over at Canyon Springs. She can rebound with the bigs but is versatile to defend either guard position. Burgess has good form on her jumper out to the 3 point line and she is one of the better catch and shoot players in the class.
Daniels , Thalia (5’11”, Sandra Day) – Extremely long prospect that will be a great addition to the already solid group of underclassmen at Sandra Day O’Connor. Daniels currently plays more of a power forward position but she should end up a hybrid of the small/power forward as a future prospect. She runs well, rebounds well and her shot has been steadily improving. Looking forward to following Daniels as she has some natural upside and ability.
Farrington , Reanna (5’9”, Hamilton) – Farrington is an intriguing prospect for sure. She rebounds and she is physical like a power forward. Farrington moves and defends like a small forward. She passes and handles the ball in the open court like a guard. PrepGirlsHoops has seen her dominate games at either position especially when she is focused on willing her team to a victory. Due to her solid court awareness and vision, Farrington could be the most versatile player in the class of 2024.
Gutierrez , Hennessie (5’6”, Cibola ) – Up and coming player. Gutierrez is still early in her development but the talent and desire is there. As she continues developing her handles and the ability to defend guards, I would expect her to transition to a shooting guard position. The mechanics on her shot looks good and she is starting to handle the ball more in the half court set…so the building blocks are there.
Hurley , Sarah (5’7”, Scottsdale Prep) – Effort player that is tough to handle in the paint out to the 3 point line and she crashes the boards hard. Her offensive outside the paint is still developing but she is making progress. Will need to continue following her through the fall.
Koester , Camryn (5’9”, Cactus Shadows) – Koester has the quickness, size and strength to defend 4 positions. She is a tough competitor who plays hard and she doesn’t back down from any situation. Koester’s is developing good range on her shot and her handles are also getting better with each showing. Expect Koester to work her way into the rotation of a deep Cactus Shadows squad. Excels in transition.
Soanes , Eilania (5’10 Desert Vista) – Another extremely long prospect who defends multiple positions and she can rebound in traffic and out of area. On the offensive end, Soanes is still working on improving her handles and developing and efficient jumper but her physical upside and potential is undeniable going forward.
