CBC took six teams to the TOC and by all accounts, it was a great event with all the proper safety protocols in place. The competition was outstanding with the opportunity to compete against some of the best clubs around like All Iowa Attack, Wisconsin Flight Elite, Minnesota Fury, Nebraska Attack and many others. Each team played seven games at the Hy-Vee Convention Center and we caught up with the staff to find out who they felt stood out in the club’s return to action.
Here are some of the CBC players in the Class of 2023 who shined the brightest.
Anjolene Ramiro Anjolene Ramiro 5'7" | CG Eaglecrest | 2023 State CO , CBC UAA 16U, 5’6, CG, Grandview
A shifty left-handed point guard who can stroke it from the perimeter was one of the showstoppers in her division and turned plenty of heads at the TOC. Shooting the ball from deep and with a nice pull-up jumper, Ramiro scored at will. What’s more impressive is how she managed to do so efficiently and while setting up her teammates with on-time passes, often using her pump fake to set up a penetrating drive and break down defenses. Ramiro played junior varsity last season in a loaded program at Grandview, where she’s having to wait her turn. But the Wolves graduated several senior guards after last school year so Ramiro shouldn’t have to wait much longer to start getting some varsity minutes.
Katie Johanning Katie Johanning 5'10" | PG Highlands Ranch | 2023 State CO , CBC UAA 16U, 5’8, CG, Highlands Ranch
An up-and-coming point guard, like Ramiro, Johanning is having to wait in line on one of Colorado’s elite rosters at Highlands Ranch, though she did clock a few varsity minutes in 2019-20. At the TOC, she knocked down some big shots. Currently more of a pass-first point guard who can attack the basket, the CBC coaches are working with her to develop her catch-and-shoot mentality and have more of a balance. They want her to think shoot and then look to pass or drive because, frankly, she can really shoot the ball when she gets in going.
Maddie Groth Maddie Groth 6'0" | SF Highlands Ranch | 2023 State CO , CBC UAA 15U, 6’0, SF, Highlands Ranch
A player who can surprise you with her nice outside shooting stroke for a six-footer, Groth was effective at the TOC with her good inside-out game that’s difficult to stop when she has it all working. Also a Highlands Ranch player, and one who should be getting more minutes soon, Groth has been working hard on her ball-handling skills all summer and is absolutely a player to watch moving forward.
