Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible.
We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges.
We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2023’s who need to be on your radar.
Jada Piercy – Spencer
A nice late season run included a win in regionals for Spencer, ending the season at 7-16 overall.
The Tigers were young last year, with just two seniors departing. One of the key returning players will be Jada Piercy, who led Spencer with 58 assists.
Piercy also scored 238 points on 37 percent shooting from the field, making a team-high 43 three-pointers. She added 81 rebounds and 32 steals, and was also consistent at the free throw line, sinking over 61 percent of her attempts.
Morgan Kathman Morgan Kathman 5'7" | PG Boone | 2023 State IA – Boone
Boone will be hoping that the experience gained by young players last year pays off this season.
Morgan Kathman Morgan Kathman 5'7" | PG Boone | 2023 State IA broke into the rotation as a newcomer, starting 11 games and seeing action in 22 total. She tallied 119 points with 36 rebounds, 25 assists, 16 steals and seven blocks.
Kathman knocked down almost 44 percent of her shots including 20 three-pointers. She also overcame a concussion that limited her during the season.
Amy Slight – Storm Lake
Amy Slight provided a strong look for Storm Lake as a newcomer to the varsity scene, producing 88 points in 19 games. She made 17 starts in her first season of high school basketball.
Slight also chipped in 130 rebounds, including 45 on the offensive glass, with 15 assists and 14 steals. She shot over 40 percent from the field and will be counted on for more production following the graduation of leading scorers Skylar Cole and Mary Yanga Mary Yanga 5'11" | PF Storm Lake | 2021 State IA .
Jenna Braun – Mason City
Seven seniors depart from the Mason City roster, leaving some big holes to fill.
Class of 2023’s Jenna Braun saw a handful of minutes last year in eight games, and should be a key contributor this coming season. She recorded seven points and a rebound in limited time.
Braun comes from a long line of Mohawk athletes and is also a strong swimmer for the school just like her sisters, recent grads Paige and Madison Braun.
Natalee Danner – Boone
Another newcomer who saw the court for Boone last season was Natalee Danner.
Danner played in nine games, making six starts. She scored 58 points with 47 rebounds, 11 steals, 11 blocks and 10 assists, sinking 14 three-pointers and shooting nearly 48 percent from the field.
Her season was ended early due to a broken leg.
