Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible.
We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges.
We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2021’s who should be valued by colleges.
Abbie Draper Abbie Draper 6'1" | PF Waverly-Shell Rock | 2021 State IA – Waverly-Shell Rock
Waverly-Shell Rock went on quite the run last year, winning a regional title and advancing to the Class 4A state tournament. The Go-Hawks finished the season 20-3 overall and return their leading scorer and rebounder in Abbie Draper Abbie Draper 6'1" | PF Waverly-Shell Rock | 2021 State IA .
Draper produced almost 18 points and eight boards a night, shooting 57 percent from the field. She finished the year with 410 points and 176 rebounds, adding in 52 blocks, 36 steals and 31 assists.
Along with her strong shooting from the field, Draper also made a dozen three-pointers.
Mary Kate King Mary Kate King 5'5" | PG Wahlert Catholic | 2021 State IA – Dubuque Wahlert
For Dubuque Wahlert to contend for a state tournament bid, they will need a big senior season out of Mary Kate King Mary Kate King 5'5" | PG Wahlert Catholic | 2021 State IA .
King was the leading scorer a year ago, producing 213 points on 30.5 percent shooting from the floor. She also led the team in assists with 62, averaging nearly three per game.
The Class of 2021 King accounted for 80 rebounds and 57 steals, burying 18 triples.
Emma Nierengarten Emma Nierengarten 6'0" | PF Decorah | 2021 State IA – Decorah
Decorah scored 12 wins a season ago and will be looking for more in 2020-21 with leading rebounder Emma Nierengarten Emma Nierengarten 6'0" | PF Decorah | 2021 State IA back.
Nierengarten produced 5.5 boards per game and 122 total, adding in 143 points, 17 assists, 14 steals and 12 blocks for the Vikings.
Allie Kutsch Allie Kutsch 5'8" | SF Wahlert Catholic | 2021 State IA – Dubuque Wahlert
Another senior-to-be that will be counted on at Dubuque Wahlert is Allie Kutsch Allie Kutsch 5'8" | SF Wahlert Catholic | 2021 State IA .
Kutsch recorded 203 points with 84 rebounds, 62 assists, 29 steals and 12 blocked shots last year, shooting nearly 37 percent from the field and 28 percent from deep. She made 36 triples, which led the Golden Eagles.
Dani Stock – Charles City
Charles City’s Dani Stock put herself in a nice position to have a big senior year.
Stock accounted for 108 points, 79 rebounds, 26 assists and 22 steals last season for the Comets. She should see those numbers improve with better percentages across the board shooting.
