Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible.
We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges.
We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2023’s who need to be on your radar.
Bryar Duwe Bryar Duwe 5'7" | PG Decorah | 2023 State IA – Decorah
Just how good was Bryar Duwe Bryar Duwe 5'7" | PG Decorah | 2023 State IA ’s first season with the Decorah girls basketball program? Definitely something to be impressed by.
Duwe scored 282 points and started all 22 games last year, adding 80 rebounds, 47 assists and 42 steals. The Vikings finished with a 12-10 record, reaching the regional semifinals.
At just under 13 points per game, Duwe shot 40 percent from the field, 30 percent from the three-point line and 70 percent at the free throw stripe. She made 28 triples in all.
Emma Donovan – Dubuque Wahlert
It is very rare to find a player with more offensive rebounds than defensive ones. It is even rarer when that player is a freshman.
Dubuque Wahlert’s Emma Donovan pulled down 110 total rebounds last year, with 67 being on the offensive glass. She scored 146 points and added 33 steals and 21 assists.
Donovan shot 45 percent from the floor, making 19 starts and playing in all 23 games for the Golden Eagles, who went 8-15 overall.
Lexi Turner – Cedar Rapids Xavier
In 18 games with six starts, Lexi Turner showed what she can bring to the Cedar Rapids Xavier rotation.
Turner scored 56 points with 28 rebounds, 19 assists and 10 steals, shooting 45 percent from the field for the Saints. She also was effective in getting to the line, sinking 15 of her 17 attempts with a handful of made triples.
Haley Gossman – Decorah
In limited minutes, Haley Gossman showed some flash, scoring 39 points in five games with 32 rebounds, 11 steals and eight assists. She definitely positioned herself with classmate Bryar Duwe Bryar Duwe 5'7" | PG Decorah | 2023 State IA for a big few years coming up for the Vikings.
Nora King – Dubuque Wahlert
Providing depth in the guard court last year for Dubuque Wahlert was Class of 2023’s Nora King.
King played in 19 games, scoring 29 points with 10 steals, nine rebounds and four assists.
The Golden Eagles lose a handful of seniors, and King should be primed to step in and take some of those minutes.
