Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible.
We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges.
We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2021’s who should be valued by colleges.
Sophia Barrett Sophia Barrett 5'9" | SF Cedar Rapids Kennedy | 2021 State IA – Cedar Rapids Kennedy
Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Sophia Barrett Sophia Barrett 5'9" | SF Cedar Rapids Kennedy | 2021 State IA held the role of swiss army knife last year.
Barrett scored 244 points with 91 rebounds, 58 steals, 47 blocked shots and 46 assists. She on 41 percent shooting from the floor for the Cougars, adding 14 made three-pointers while also sinking 73 percent of her free throw attempts.
Matayia Tellis Matayia Tellis 5'5" | PG Iowa City West | 2021 State IA – Iowa City West
As Matayia Tellis Matayia Tellis 5'5" | PG Iowa City West | 2021 State IA went in 2019-20, so did Iowa City West. And the Trojans will likely need even more of that to succeed this coming winter.
Tellis ended her junior campaign with 254 points, 149 rebounds, 59 assists and 57 steals, shooting over 38 percent from the floor with 19 made three-pointers. She is one of four players back with starting experience including Providence commit Audrey Koch Audrey Koch 5'11" | SF Iowa City West | 2021 State IA .
Kaitlyn Brunson – Linn-Mar
Linn-Mar had some struggles last winter, but the Lions return several key cogs that will be counted on in 2020-21.
Included in that group is Class of 2021’s Kaitlyn Brunson, who led the team with 52 assists. She also recorded 178 points, 52 rebounds and 40 steals for Linn-Mar.
Hayley Chappell Hayley Chappell 5'6" | PG Valley | 2021 State IA – West Des Moines Valley
For West Des Moines Valley to return to the list of contenders in Class 5A, they will need a big senior season out of Hayley Chappell Hayley Chappell 5'6" | PG Valley | 2021 State IA .
As a starter last year for the Tigers, Chappel registered 94 points with 81 rebounds. She led the team with 60 assists in 22 games, adding 32 steals on just under 31 percent shooting from the floor.
Chappel was also nearly automatic at the free throw line, sinking 80 percent of her attempts.
Hallie Peak – Linn-Mar
Another player with starting experience back for Linn-Mar is Class of 2021’s Hallie Peak.
Peak produced 115 points with 90 rebounds, 27 assists and 27 steals a season ago, shooting over 41 percent from the field. She also knocked down 13 three-pointers for the Lions.
