Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible.
We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges.
We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2022’s who could be primed for big seasons.
Lauren Blake Lauren Blake 5'11" | SF Indianola | 2022 State IA – Indianola
Indianola finished the 2019-20 season with 16 wins and returns leading scorer Lauren Blake Lauren Blake 5'11" | SF Indianola | 2022 State IA to the fold.
The Class of 2022’s Blake led the way for the Indians by averaging just under 16 points per night. She was also the leading rebounder with 115 total and five per game.
Blake, who scored 365 points in all, shot almost 42 percent from the field, 70 percent from the free throw line and 34.5 percent from the three-point arc. She added 54 assists, 37 steals and even blocked five shots.
Cleao Murray Cleao Murray 5'8" | SF Ankeny Centennial | 2022 State IA – Ankeny Centennial
Ankeny Centennial’s season ended just a game shy of the state tournament, as the Jaguars fell to Cedar Falls in the regional championship after winning 13 games.
One of the younger standouts for Ankeny Centennial was Cleao Murray Cleao Murray 5'8" | SF Ankeny Centennial | 2022 State IA , as the Class of 2022’s Murray led the team with 72 assists. She also had 218 points on 40 percent shooting, making 25 three-pointers and adding in 88 rebounds, 38 steals and six blocks.
Lyric Sellers – Des Moines East
It was a banner year for Des Moines East’s Lyric Sellers, as the guard/forward combo scored 210 points.
Sellers, who started 18 games and played in 21, also had 80 rebounds with 40 steals, 22 assists and 11 blocked shots. She effective from the field, shooting 31 percent and making 41 three-pointers.
Mara Bishop Mara Bishop 5'7" | PG Indianola | 2022 State IA – Indianola
There was plenty of youth on the court for Indianola last year, and that experience should pay off this coming season.
Class of 2022’s Mara Bishop Mara Bishop 5'7" | PG Indianola | 2022 State IA was one of those young starters, scoring 208 points with 88 assists, 67 rebounds and 47 steals. She made over 35 percent of her attempts and also sank 25 three-pointers while shooting over 72 percent at the free throw line.
Sydney Remmert Sydney Remmert 5'6" | SG Cedar Falls | 2022 State IA – Cedar Falls
Despite being young, Sydney Remmert Sydney Remmert 5'6" | SG Cedar Falls | 2022 State IA found her name called on a nightly basis in the Cedar Falls lineup.
Remmert scored 171 points with 84 rebounds, 33 assists, 27 steals and seven blocks for the Tigers. She made over 43 percent of her attempts and knocked down 19 three-pointers while also sinking 32 of 37 free throws.
